Hey, I'm Bryce from Indiana. I've wanted to go to Burning Man since I first read about it several years ago and things never panned out for me to be able to. This year I've finally gotten around to planning the trip. Right now I'm still reading up on everything- I've read the survival guide and suggested reading on the main site, but still feel like I need more.
If there are some specific things I should check out I would appreciate the advice.

Welcome Bryce. Keep reading. I think the scariest thing to many is feeling the unknown of heading toward an event like this without knowing the lay of the land. Do you have your tickets yet? That seems to be the point of no return for so many people. Buy the ticket and you will find that everything else falls into place.

This is my first time after wanting to go for years. Once I had that ticket in hand, something clicked. I have all my gear in place and I'm nit-picking and tweaking thigns a bit.
Honestly, this is a big financial burden and I don't make much. I'm going anyway. I can't "just get" another bike or an super fancy camp. I'm bringing the beaten track bike I rode for the past 6 years (including a year as a NYC bike messenger) and I found Amazon deals on a good tent and Kelty shade structure.
I had an REI dividend and 20% off cupon which helped with other things. Doing my usual insane research has paid off in having some decent gear without spending anywhere near what I thought I would.
I saw a link on here somewhere for a fiberglass, telescoping flag pole that's surprisingly in my budget, and an awesome Jolly Roger flag elsewhere. Since I have the basics and some extra gear, I can think about a funny sign or a few extra solar LED lamps or extra shade or a "wall" for the sunshade ...
My tax return will fund the basic travel from here to BRC, including staying a night in the two Air Force bases which happen to be roughly 1/3 of the way there and reasonable distances for a day's travel.
I can squirrel away $200 a month for travel in addition to the basics, maybe even stay a day or two later or take a different route through Colorado to see my kooky uncle or a friend. I've been able to do a little extra AF reserve work. Normally I stay away from it (They know I want out) but I have extra incentive to do it, and my job is fun anyway. I work in public affiars, which is very close to what I'll volunteer to do at Media Mecca.
Once I had that ticket in hand -- even with the huge fiasco and being bumpes 20,000 places in line to a more expensive tier -- it all came together. I can leave tomorrow.
When I get back, I can start planning with the same level of obsession for a permanent move to Austin, which has a similar ability to link people together that the playa does.
I still have my depression, self-doubt, frustrations but I have a goal. I'm pulling myself out of this horrible rut one day at a time.
