UD, that is so awesome. I DO have rythym!
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

I don't get it.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

LOL. I clicked on all the squares. It started flashing and there were chimes sounding. The more squares I clicked the faster it started flashing and chiming until I had gotten all of the squares clicked and then there was nothing. Everything stopped. Kind of like having sex with no orgasm. I just couldn't figure out what the point if it was.

JK... it's a 'music' game...turn squares on or off to create your own 'groove'...sounds like you were overzealous and gave the machine its own lonely orgasm...

Oh, a game. But then how do you win? I mean what's the point? Just click and make pretty sounds and light? Hmmmm.... Maybe I need to try it again when I'm stoned and report back.

A lot of good games don't involve a "win." Rolling down a hill, for instance. I wasn't as enchanted as other people, but playing around without a "point" is good for the soul. Kinda like burningman. Only squarish and chimey.

I guess this was a perfect example of that old saying "Expectation
exceeds realization."

Thanks UD! I guess some of us are easily entertained JK, haha

There was an art installation on playa this past year named Syzygryd (hope that's spelled right) that had a similar interface, at three stations. You could 'build' music, and after awhile the sounds associated with the boxes would change to a new library of sounds to play with. It was the piece shaped like a tornado with three outrigger legs. I think they had fire effects associated with it later in the week. I talked to one of the builders, Billy, from Oakland, real friendly guy. Perhaps this software is related to them. Fun stuff.

Seaquence is a similar type of music toy, with more of a range of what you can do- 4 different types of sounds, you can adjust the "waves" and how prominent each "sound creature" is in the composition, endless additions....

Nice post! This is a simple, but effective, musical diversion: ToneMatrix by digital artist Andre Michelle

Andre has other playthings on his site (you can get the TM embed codes there).

ToneMatrix was inspired by Toshio Iwai's Tenori-On both of which represent a step in the evolution of musical instrument interfaces.

Oh, and yes, there is a whole subculture emerging in the last few years around alternative controllers: monome and retractable are some noteable examples.

There is also Grid Fest in May in Santa Fe NM if you are feeling all subculturey and cartesian.
