I was hesitant to go BACK, for my second year. I'm always hesitant to talk to people. I'm paralyzed by shyness, more often than not. I was hesitant to go to the MnG. There, that's three!

I just plan on being as friendly, loud and vivacious as possible. Being highly inebriated the majority of the time will help this too.

Yeah. I found all you had to do was START the conversation. People seem real eager to talk. It's had that effect in my default life.

Mixer. I can't stress enough that you should bring more than you think you'll need. And if you can't use it, by Thursday or Friday, there are plenty of bars that can.

Blinkies and other lights that keep you seen when out late. Whether biking or walking you need to be lit, and glow sticks don't really do very much. I buy them regularly.

And, of course, more alcohol. I buy alcohol, like many playa things, over the course of the year. Spreads the pain.

It's not unheard of for shy to come off as rude, it's a socially awkward thing.

1) sleep - I didn't want to miss anything...
2) leave - had to go back before Brigadoon disappeared and left me stranded in limbo...
3) initiate conversations - once started it was easy - in many ways it helped me shed my non-playa skin just by walkiing up to people and start a conversation about, well anything. My favorite approach was stolen from a movie - forget which one - but just walking up to people and announcing "Hi, I'm Iconoclast! Damn glad to meet you!!" then grabbing their hand and shaking it.. Some reacted well, others thought I was fucking with them. I was terrified at first, but after I did it a few times, I was less reluctant.

We had a great conversation starter. "Hey! Ya wanna suck Superman's cock? He has kryptonite kum! It's ABSINTHE!"

That was a pretty good ice-breaker with strangers. If they did not want to converse and just kept walking,,,, "WHAT ARE YOU? SOME KINDA HOMOPHOBE?" Some conversations go better than others.

After doing that all week, pretty much any interaction with strangers comes about pretty easy. I'm offering now an opportunity for those of you who have difficulty starting a conversation to come and hawk cock with us for a few hours. Your shyness will fade like an overheated Polaroid.

1. deciding to buy a ticket and go in the first place (took a bit for my boyfriend to convince me that it was an awesome endeavour to undertake). I'm so glad he did.

2. letting go of the feeling that I need to be concerned about what others think of me. Now I carry that into my everyday life (except when not socially appropriate), and do whatever makes me happy!

3. walkin' around topless and getting body painted for the first time!

Still need to work on the talking to strangers part....

1. Dressing "differently."

I would not normally wear blinged out bug-eyed sunglasses, a pink tutu 24 hrs a day, or bare my tits in public. But I'm glad I did at Burning Man.

2. Talk to strangers.

Normally I'm pretty shy, and being around a ton of people who are much more out-going than me was a little overwhelming at first. Then I decided to think of people at BM more as individuals rather than one giant seething scary mass of people, and that helped break my shyness. I'm glad I did at Burning Man.

3. Let go of stereotypes.

There aren't any at Burning Man. Somebody is always going to be younger, older, fatter, skinnier, richer, poorer, more drunk, high, sober, more creative etc. etc. etc. than you. Once I stopped comparing myself to others and just remembered to me just me, just Moonsplash, my Burning Man world got infinitely better. I'm glad I did this at Burning Man.

Let me add one more thing....

4. Volunteer.

I volunteered at AirPlaya last year, greeting complete strangers at the Reno airport. LOVED THIS. By far one of the best volunteer experiences I have ever had in my life - just seeing the excitement of people coming back "home", soothing the nerves of birgins, and helping to sort out problems for people (ride shares, hotel rooms, what to buy, how to get to the nearest INSERT ANYTHING HERE...) - loved it, loved it, loved it.
