My First Burn, A True Rite of Passage
My First Burn, A True Rite of Passage
Heyllo and a hearty whats up to one and all! This is going to be my first Burning Man and I cannot wait. I've been spending hours and hours on the website trying to learn all I can (even though I should probably be studying for my exams hahahaha) before I go but I'm starting to get the feeling I wont really know anything until I can feel the playa under my feet.

Howdy, I'm guessing you've found the first timers guide from last year by now. Keep a look out for this years update. -- Read, search, and read some more here on eplaya, and of course ask your questions. -- Join the Jack Rabbit Speaks (JRS), and your regional lists to stay up to date on stuff and things. While I'm thinking of it, you might want to join the Michigan Google group over at mi_bm(at)googlegroups(dot)com since it's mostly full of Detroiters and events going on in Detroit.
Otherwise, welcome to eplaya! Watch out for snark!

No, no, no, you need to embrace the snark. You need to avoid anyone who wants to throw corned beef on you and slather you with mustard (or not, if that's your thing).Rye wrote:Thanks for the advice C187! And I'll be careful to avoid the snarkYou would think it would be counter-productive on a site like this, I prefer positive vibes and creativity over negativity any day
Do your homework, there's tons of invaluable info here and some of the most helpful people youll ever meet. You're in for one hell of a ride.
Welcome to ePlaya.

Hi Rye!
There's snark on any message board, even ePlaya.
We're not all trying strictly to be only productive; this is also a social place and one to waste time and geek out. But as boards go, it is more friendly and informative than many a place. (Most of the snark-catchers haven't spent much time observing the culture of the board, haven't done any research whatsoever before asking a question, or assume they are being attacked when someone experienced disagrees with them.)
Anyway, welcome . . .

Lmao! hmmm corn beef and mustard, haven't tried that one yet, but hey gotta try everything at least once right? Could be fun!
Thanks for the welcome and the laugh Sic Pup
And very true Savannah, gotta have fun with it! haha thanks for the welcome!

It's not that those of us can't see your magical unicorns, it's just that you can't understand why we don't want to. -- It's not a negativity or bad vibes thing, it's just some of us hum on a different frequency.
Embrace the snark or avoid it. Regardless someone will get mustard on the face. (My bet is on Sic Pup..) Although I should warn you Savannah attacks everyone... with sunshine, cheer, and those other things.. yeah! you know what they are.

Hey, Rye, the snark (at its best) is a Rite of Passage in itself, kind of a hazing, to see if you'll become a liablity on the playa. Some of my brothers and sisters get a little out of hand, but it's always best not to take it personally.
Yeah, since this year's theme is Rites of Passage, you will undoubtedly find very special ways to get your playa cherry popped. Enjoy the ride!

Hate to say that homework can be counterproductive to your studying, but try to keep the balance good until your exams are over!!!
It's all pretty addictive.
motherly tone out.
ENJOY!!!

And here's my $.02 on the snark, as a fellow novice who has been obsessively combing this board for months: it tends to land hardest on those who fail to honor the 10 principles. As much as the snarky ones scoff at such things
BUT: "ePlaya is not THE playa"
I take that on faith because I am headed for my first Burn, too.
Welcome!

The snark is a way of playing with each other, it keeps us connected and engaged. If we weren't doing anything but "how to build a shade structure in 10 easy and 37 complicated steps" you'd lose a lot of the people who've built 7 shade structures and could offer advice, because it would be boring. As it is, there's a variety of people here with a lot of different experiences. Step into the Bar Thread (Open Discussion sub-forum) to just sort of "hang out" and see that someone makes coffee every morning, the Misa makes us breakfast, and that if Ygmir doesn't give us a Saturday morning cartoon, someone will step into the breech. Breach? Beech? Think of it as playful sparring rather than serious blood drawing.
