One with the Playa

Post by geospyder » Wed Apr 13, 2011 2:45 pm

While checking the items in my Burningman boxes yesterday I ran across a Ziploc bag of nails and copper wire. These were some remains of last year's man. I was trying to figure out how to make some sort of jewelry with the items and was twisting the copper wire when I noticed a couple drops of blood on my desk. Apparently one end of the wire was very sharp and cut my thumb just deep enough to make it drip blood. Like friends that cut themselves to become blood brothers/sisters I am now one with the Playa - a little blood, dust and copper from the Man.

You're probably confusing your spiritual euphoria with tetanus.

Didn't even think of that so out of curiosity checked my records and saw that I received a DTAP shot in Sept of 08. The copper unfortunately was too brittle to do anything with. I do have about two dozen nails from the man so I ought to be able to make something to gift.

You can try annealing it, just get it red hot over a stove then let it cool. It should be flexible again after that.

Already tossed. The wire was about the thickness of a wire coat hanger but any bend just broke it. I saw it lying in the ashes last year and thought it would be cool to make something out of it - thinking it would be pliable.

Assuming it might be tetanus you might start with gifting a living will.

A real artist would find a way to incorporate that wire even if it meant supergluing it onto something else...just so they could say it's there.

Ok...that was mean...but it's late and a quick shot once in a while is just irresistible. Seriously I've ground up the metal pieces and put them in small vials and made them into necklaces, and I have embedded some wire pieces from the man into some metal clay things I've made...in short if you're seriously wanting to incorporate it into art of some kind...think outside the box. It can be done. Heck even my cargo trailer has pieces of rebar from the man welded on for attachment points and other uses.

Unfortunately I'm not an artist. I'm lucky if I can hammer a nail straight. My first year someone handed me a nail and said it came from the man. I just thought it was cool. I may do something simple like dip the nails in different color paint and attached some sort of thread, string, ribbon so they can be hung around the neck like a pendant. Very simple gift.

Hmmm - all those little pieces could be soaked in salt/vinegar to make them shiny and placed in a vial to be worn as a pendant. Looks like I'll dig them out of the trash can.

My last tetanus shot was in July of 2008.
I don't know if the doctors were gonna use a rusty scalpel, but,
it was right before I went under the knife for gall bladder surgery.

catman - are you going to be at the meet and greet on Thursday? If I remember to be there I have something you might enjoy.

I plan to go to the M&G, IF I make it to the event this year!

I'm being nickled and dimed alot latley.
On April 5th one of my cats broke her jaw and set me back $700...as of now. I was gonna write about her in Damn Cat next week after the vet checks her prognosis on Monday.
Last Friday, the 15th, while on my way home from work on 395 through Pleasant Valley, WHAM! the altenator pulley on my Jetta flys off. $850.
Got friends visting from Missouri this week, haven't seen them since 1989.
In fact they landed when Obama was visting here on Thursday.
