I remember reading in the Los Angeles Times, probably circa 1962 or so when they had an artical on how to survive a nuclear explosion. From what I remember, if you were to see that mushroom cloud forming you where to gather wet newspapers and get yourself in the "gutter" of the street. Right up against the curb, cover yourself with those wet newspapers and you would make it though the explosion.
Now today we might think that is stupid, but back then there was lots of newspapers everywhere. Racks up and down the streets and in every garage there were bundles of newspapers rapped with twine ready to be taken to the "newspaper drive" at the local school.
I went and searched and it looks like it might have been 1961 and as I thought about it back then we called it a Hydrogen bomb. I was stationed with ARADCOM (american regional air defense command) which had bases in and around the Los Angeles area with Nuclear missles in them. Not many people knew about this.

I have to say here that our government seems pretty much incapable of keeping secrets even when there is a good reason to. And being personally acquainted with several right coast bureaucrats, I can confidently tell you that they are just regular people and, while they might be momentarily paralyzed by really bad news, could not possibly refrain from calling Aunt Nancy in Oregon or whatever. So the news would get out.ygmir wrote:so:
if, a cloud of radioactive bad crap, was heading towards 100 million people, would the gov. tell them, and, deal with the mass exodus and panic?
Or, let what happens, happen, and, keep quiet.
Especially considering said bureaucrats probably are on the east coast.
The only well-kept secrets in this country are the ones that people would really rather not know.

Journalists know many more secrets than they can print, due to standards of evidence.
Most things really aren't hard to find out.
When secrets are kept successfully, it is usually done by making people think they already know the answers.
Few people actually want to know things, even their own personal risk.

That site IS worthy of consideration... however, you have to take into account that they are selling "anti-radiation" products, and using one of the most common ways to get people to clear out their shelves - the world famous Scare Tactic.can't sit still wrote:This page has a LOT of info on radiation;

Knowing people who were in the industry (one of my co-workers worked for a number of years at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station) and having to have some knowledge in various disasters (including nuclear) I found their sales website, er, "informational page" uses a LOT of scare tactic in what it's saying, and seems that they are portraying extremes as baseline.
Not to say what they wrote isn't worth reading... but don't take THEIR word as the gospel truth about this stuff. After all, if I sold emergency survival kits, I'd sure as hell try to get you to believe the end of the world as we know it was right around the corner, and the ONLY way you'll survive is to have one of the BB Sue Survival Kits...because without it, who knows, your chance of dying from not having the items in MY kit are greatly increased to almost certain mortality in the next 3-5 days!!!
(Of course... you can also get air and water from a number of sources, but it won't be the same as MY air and water, in a sealed container... )

So, I've been reading up on how the corner of Ukraine/Belorussia up to 30 kilometers out from Chernobyl have become a sort of nature reserve, because almost no one (comparatively speaking) goes there and the animals are left alone. So, I have been wondering what the effects in Japan would be. I'm assuming that they are going to have to seal up the damaged reactors in situ, and that there will an exclusion zone. But it will play out differently, because the water that carries radioactive elements is going to be able to move freely throughout the ocean. I don't think that's going to make much different to us, for the most part. It's a big ocean. But given time, there will be bioaccumalation in large predators. It would be nice if that meant that we wouldn't kill blue-fin tuna and sharks, but well, I'm afraid they'd catch the animal and then run the tests--after it's already dead.
Of course, I am a callous person for caring for fish more than people. Some people will die, others will have cancers and many will never go home. Back at Chernobyl again, it's been found that many (mostly older) evacuees ended up have health impacts associated with moving off the land and from villages that they were born and grew-up in, rather than illness directly associated with radiation exposure.
So, this will continue to be an interesting story, as it unfolds through the years. And I have to think that no matter how well the reactors are sealed, rising sea level will complicate things.

I posted the link for the wide-ranging info. "The consequences of Chernobyl reported from 170,000 sources and 30,000 publications, the Russian death rates analysis covers a dozen contaminated area, with 7 million people in each area."
It's just reports. Your reaction is solely up to you.

There is more fallout from Japan than just radiation. GOV is talking about abandoning Tokyo and moving farther away. There is even talk about abandoning large parts of the country. The foreign banking industry is getting out of town FAST. Agriculture and fishing are crashing. Now, Germany wants to shut down all their reactors and use renewables;

As nukes shut down, they will be replaced by coal in the short term. Japan is now in violation of the Kyoto protocol. Other countries will increase fossil fuel burning. China is increasing coal use like crazy.

Ok I was going to call bullshit...but then I found the links on Infowars / Prison Planet...did some digging...and there just might be a kernel of truth to this....it definitely warrants looking a little deeper but I just don't have the time / bandwidth to spend on it...
Meanwhile....right here in Nevada we've got something very unusual going on. It's being nicknamed the Hawthorne Quake Swarm.

Closer Look:

Even closer:

Long story short over the past two weeks this area has been very active. Most of the time the quakes are 1.2, 1.5, but occasionally some 3.0's are showing up. What's interesting is that it's like you'll see 2, 3, sometimes 5 per hour. And it appears this is happening on a fault nobody knows much about. The media stories on this brought up the point that a few of the more major quakes of late have happened on previously unknown faults. I don't have that link at hand but....I do have this one.

Long story short something's definitely going on. I wonder what would happen if we get say a 7.0 or larger out there....the potential impacts kinda makes you step back and go whoa....

I was holding the VHS tape, Dante's Peak, just yesterday. All about Mammoth Mountain and what could happen there. I used to live and work in Mammoth and it has been a yo yo ride from a area of the forest dieing, signs posted that say "Do not stay in this area, gas coming from the ground will kill you" or something to that effect. As a matter of fact a hiker did sit and rest in the wrong area where they found his body. http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs172-96/ The lakes pictured are where I would catch "dinner" cook it on the tailgate of my truck, with my dog "Scrounge" The dates are off just a little, the USGS started monitoring the area in 1979, which I remember because they posted no swiming at Mammoth Hot creek that year because of the earthquake the year before.
It seems the recent swarm is just to the north of the Long Valley Caldera which we all have been watching for over 30 years since it first became active in the late 1970's.
"Long Valley Caldera is located 20 km south of Mono Lake along the east side of the Sierra Nevada in east-central California. This area of eastern California has produced numerous volcanic eruptions over the last 3 million years including the massive, caldera-forming eruption 760,000 years ago. The most recent eruptions occurred just 500 to 600 years ago from vents along the Mono Crater-Inyo crater volcanic chain, which extends south from Mono Lake into the western part of Long Valley caldera.
A strong earthquake swarm in May of 1980, which included four magnitude 6 earthquakes near the southern margin of the caldera and increased uplift and extension of the Long Valley Caldera, marked the onset of the latest a period of activity in the caldera. This activity continues today and includes recurring earthquake swarms and continued dome-shaped uplift of the central section of the caldera accompanied by changes in thermal springs and gas emissions.
In addition to crustal deformation measurements, the USGS Long Valley Observatory monitors earthquakes, hydrologic conditions, gas discharge, and other geophysical conditions in the Long Valley Caldera region"
I am a bit confused between the dates above, May 1980, and when I remember earthquakes in Mammoth lakes, Ca. My first daughter was born Dec 1079, I had moved from Mammoth at least 6 months prior to her birth and it had been at least 6 months to a year before I moved that Mammoth had its first real earthquake. I can remember it well as I was working, construction, on a custom home and when the earthquake happened I watched a friend and co worker jump a 10' hole in the gound from a standing position. My wife, to be, worked at a local hotel so this would make it between march 1978 and Oct 1978, when Mammoth Lakes first started to shake. I think I found it, a 5.4 on Oct 4th 1978 at 4 something in the afternoon. A bit later in the year then I remember, but that was a year when we were snow skiing until September, houses were covered with snow, dogs running over the roof, so construction might have started later in the year. (skiing in shorts without a shirt is a good way to get a really bad sunburn.)
Hot creek looking west, isn't it beautiful?
