Knoxville, TN to the Playa
Knoxville, TN to the Playa
Hello lovely burner family! I'm a long time regional burner and a Burning Man virgin. I got a scholarship ticket this year (woohoo!) and I'm trying everything I can to save money so that I can actually attend the burn. I haven't had any luck with ride shares (I know it's early, but planning ahead never killed anyone...well, maybe someone...but the statistics speak against it...), so I'm thinking about flying. Someone told me about some biodiesel buses that run from Reno to the Playa (not Green Tortoise, which cost $500!!!). Does anyone know the skinny on these?

The skinny is that they didn't have the proper license to operate that way and they don't run anymore. You can almost certainly find a ride from the Reno airport. There will be a rideshare board soon/

Yep, you can find all sorts of rides from the airport. Sometime in the next few months a rideshare page for this year will be up.. last year it was at rideshare.burningman.com.
Another suggestion if fly'n out ends up not being in the cards.. Would be to contact groups likely passing by you, or to contact groups in states close to you. So then at least it would only be a short drive to a group of people that you could rideshare with.

Thanks guys! That's a bummer about the buses. They sounded like a good option for poor burners. I'll be on the lookout for rideshares. The only problem with driving out is that I'm a grad student and can't miss the extra days it would take to drive. School starts too early for us! Where there's a will, there's a way.

Hi Nic!
You do sound like a good candidate for flying. I have to tell you--I love a long drive on the way out there, but by the time the event is over I (sort of) envy those who fly.
Allow lots and lots of time to connect with your flight on the way home. It can take 3+ hours to get out of the city if you leave at a popular time, then 2 hours to Reno by car. Pad that out by several more hours to be safe.

Here's me (right) and a friend on the Bio Bus my first burn. I think this might have been the last year they ran before getting ticketed.Nicneven wrote:Thanks guys! That's a bummer about the buses. When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Thanks Savannah. I am thinking of chipping in with some friends to get a room in Reno for Monday night. That would take the stress out of getting back to the airport and allow me to shower before flying back. I keep cringing because costs keep going up, but as my really straight-laced brother said (what a surprise!), "it's worth it!"

A plan is what you vary from.
Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!
