Flying In

I'm a private pilot interested in flying in to burning man for the week and was wondering if there was another experienced aviator who would be willing to give me a few pointers about this. I've been trying to find airport information related to Black Rock City Airport but I've been unable to locate it. I have tons of questions and would love to have them answered so I can start planning for the trip.

Some pilots from the San Francisco Bay Area have problems because they are used to taking off at sea level with temperatures in the 60 or 70s. Black Rock Airport is at almost 4,000 and temps can be in the hundreds, often in the 90s.

I would suggest getting familar with your planes' air density chart, an hour or two with your instructor practicing soft field techniques and a call to your insurance company. While BRC airport is a legal airport for a short time each year, some insurance companies may have an issue. Never hurts to check.
At least you won't need to worry about a ramp inspection. I have found that landing there works best if you really watch your instruments. The length of the runway gives a slightly false impression of your distance above the ground. Though, if you are instrument rated that won't be a factor.
Bring three of the "screw in the ground" type of tie downs. It is a fun place to fly into. I strongly suggest doing it.
If you are renting, certainly tell the FBO where you are going. If you own your plane, plan on a thorough cleaning after you get home. My biggest fear is the corrosive dust within the wings and fuselage. I spent hours with compressed air and a pressure washer cleaning up my plane.

A beginner? No. A low time pilot, yes. Any time that I feel a little rusty or a little hesitant I always get some dual time. You can pick up bad habits and not even be aware of them. Also there are constant changes in the regs. A CFI will bring you up to speed on those as well. I usually get some dual time at least once a year and I received my license in 1987.
