COD REALLY needs SF help and a few more Members

Post by andi » Sun Jul 25, 2004 4:24 pm

The Cult of Distraction (http://www.cultofdistraction.org/bman/bm04.html) is ramping up for the playa and in order to deliver the highly interactive project we have devised we NEED help getting ready in SF right NOW! We are also looking for a few more COD Members to round out our crew.

COD is a small camp of 15 Members max. We are highly organized and 2004 will be our 6th year so we have plenty of experience to draw on. From food, beverages, structures, interactivity, and style, we focus on creativity and quality of experience rather than quantity of people or level of volume. We are not a first class hotel, although everything we do is top notch. We are also not slave drivers, every Member has to put in a little here and there every day to keep the camp running, but more Participation is voluntary.

Our most critical need right now is help in San Francisco with tent and bar construction (need space to build it and assistance in its construction, we have the design, tools, and materials). We also need help organizing the other areas of the camp; LNT/washing, electrical and lighting, kitchen, and the COD Club.

So if you live in SF or nearby can you help us out? And if you want a high quality camp to call home (1 block from both the playa and Centercamp) that is incredibly interactive and fun (while leaving you 90% of your time to wander the playa as you wish), then become a Member of COD today. Hurry the last few remaining spots will fill up soon. Contact Dan at: [email protected] if you can help us out with our SF needs or if you want to become a Member of COD.

Thank you.

We are going to be near 7:00 and Venus. If you are still looking for a high quality-low stress small camp with the most outrageous fun, for a modest investment, drop us a line at [email protected]

My name is Andi, Dan and I started up COD in 1997 and with a couple of absent years this will mark our 6th year on the playa (7 for me and Dan). Check out our website (http://www.cultofdistraction.org/) to get some more background, it is a little dated but you get the gist of it. Our main interactive element is the public area in the front of our camp called the COD Club. We are essentially a bar/small nightclub but more conversation friendly than the much louder and more crowded establishments in BRC. We are the small neighborhood gift bar you wander into late one night and never leave.
Our concept of a "gift bar" means that nothing is expected of anyone and there is no exchange. So no asking for a drink (we can't ask for anything in return) and no barter. We are here to offer drinks and other goodies as a gift, as such it must be given and not asked for. At COD we require Participants to make a connection, any connection with someone before we give them something. That could mean getting to know the bartender or another Participant.
Being behind the bar is all about improvisation, theatrics, and drunken fun. We sometimes refer to the bar as the Altar of Distraction and our usual hours of operation are when it's dark (we also ban time at COD). Daytime operations are up to individual COD Members if they are willing and able to host the COD Club then. We are having 3 parties (M/W/F) and we will be active every night from midnight on if not earlier.
We will have full amenities in the private area in the back with a kitchen, showers, private lounging area, the bunker, garbage and wastewater system, and plenty of shade. Each COD Member puts in US$400 (if we get to 12 it drops to US$350) and you get all of the above plus breakfast, snacks, and dinner, full bar access, 1 gal/day drinking water, 1 gal/day washing water, space to park and camp, a great location near 7:00 on Venus, a small camp of 15 Members maximum, and a week you will not forget.
