Has anyone got info on how to make a hanging mandala

Post by lordloki » Wed Apr 27, 2011 7:30 pm

Im looking for resources on how to make a hanging mandala they may have a different name not sure though, the kind that you put poles in the ground and use Lycra to make designs and string them up according to the design in mind, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

im guessing that the over all amount of posts around the circumference dictates the geometry of the centre? eg if you have x amount of external posts then the centre would be divisible by the amount of external posts?

that's nearly 60 feet...and huge! You sure about the 18 meters?
Given, that doesn't sound strange in Black Rock City..

Are you talking about string sculptures? Sort of like the wire stuff from the 70s, but writ much larger?

kinda, using a combination of string and lycra or muslin cloth to create a petal shape, if i knew how to upload photos i could show an example but i havnt a clue, the basis of the idea is a mandala hung up via posts and string its really cool looking :)

Well, to start...can you segment it? To be built on the playa? It should be somewhat heavy and suspended from the top end anchored at the bottom...so it can spin...and not flail about and destroy the main structure or kill someone. Keep checking, and ill try and come up with an idea, or maybe someone else will. Research is the watchword, but, never having been to the playa, I assume...its best to get feedback from people who've been there. On that note...it can get extremely windy. 120 mph gust, reported, on my first night. Normally 60mph are the heaviest.

You could slip some fence tubing over t posts at each support...and use guylines at each pole. Just an idea..but try a heavy fishing line underneath the mandala to keep it from crushing people underneath?
