Looking to be adopted by a themed group :)

Post by oryx » Thu Apr 07, 2011 5:02 pm

Hello Burning Man Society!
I'm incredibly stoked to be going to Burning Man for the first time this year. Unfortunately I will most likely be going on my own. I was curious if any themed group would be interested in adopting me =) I come out of Orange County California. Here's what I can bring to the table: a positive attitude, ready assistance in setting up taking down anything, entertainment through hooping (fire and non fire), and an interesting compassionate personality. I'm also incredibly outgoing and willing to go avante-garde with any theme as I am a performer myself. Please consider adopting me, you won't be sorry ;).
And even if you aren't interested, if you could give me some insight on how to join a group that would be amazing since I'm still new to this whole process. Here's looking to a great event! <3

as most will say read all you can and post and get an idea of where you would like to fit and ask, there are many camps out there and you will find a fit somwhere.

Welcome!

I think you might have better luck researching the camps in this forum and then contacting the ones that interest you. That being said, if it's your first time you are probably going to have your hands full figuring everything out once you are there. Adding theme camp duties on top of that might be overwhelming. There's plenty of opportunities to volunteer/help out/etc once you get to the playa and get your bearings. :)

Hi oryx,

How old are you?
Do you perform your hooping in public?
Do you have a video of your talent?
Do you have camping supplies?
How do you feel about rampant hedonism, nudity and drunkenness?
Are you comfortable around same-sex environments?
How do you feel about touching strangers in a sensual manner?

Just a few things I would like to know about you before initiating any conversations.

Hi Orxy,
I too am looking for a camp and someone to share travel expenses. I am in L.A. and went last year - was amazing. I rented an RV and will do the same this year. I am looking for a new camp and a BM Buddy to share the experience! I hope all is well! Let me know....It is all good....

I will be 19 for BM
I do for casual experiences although I haven't done "performances" I just like to hangout and groove.
YES and I will post a video.
I plan on acquiring camping supplies.
I love it.
Completely.
Hahh.. well that's completely relative to who and why I would be doing such an act. Also relative to the extremity. So.. maybe?

OneLove- Sounds cool. Is the RV just for yourself? What kind of expenses are you looking to share?

Here's just a small video:

The "talent" video wouldn't upload. Hopefully this is adequate enough. It's really simple as far as my hooping goes. I have so many moves I chose not showcase because the song was so short. If I can get the other video to upload, then I will post it.

Read this thread:
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=36767

Now read it again.

Now a few more times, and pardon my giant ego while I quote myself.
I wrote: DO:

-Contact camps EARLY! Every year, we are contacted 1-10 people wanting to join our camp.... about a week or two before the burn. I don't even reply to them anymore. We have spent the entire year prepping for this. You are not going to slip right in a week before. If you have not talked to us at least 6 months before the burn, odds are really low of you gettin in.

-Understand & be enthusiastic about the theme of the camp you want to join. The few that I did respond to had no idea what we were about.

-Find out what the camp needs, and bring it.

-Be prepared to do whatever the senior members of your camp ask of you, within reason of course. You are the one trying to join the family. Failure to pull your weight gets you disowned real quick.

-Ask ask ask and get clear answers of how the camp works. You should know before had how food, shelter, waste, dues, all that should work. It's one thing to get fucked by the camp, as illustrated in tales above. It's another if you show up surprised because you didn't listen.

-FOLLOW THE ADVICE HERE!

DONT:

-Expect the camp to buy you anything. That ain't how it works.

-Expect a ride down with no gas money to contribute.
-Show up without a ticket or the money to buy one. These both happened to me, same person. 2 days into being there, we kicked his ass to the curb and left him in the desert. (there's more to that story, but not in this thread) I'm a little bummed he didn't die out there.

-Tell us what a hard worker you are, particularly if you are contacting the camp late in the game. If you are such a hard worker, why have you been so lax in your planning? Actions speak louder than words. Contact early and help the camp for 6 months beforehand. That proves you are a hard worker.

-Sell yourself with any of the following:
My awesome system for recycling! Fuck off. We've been doing this for over a decade. Unless you are going to haul all the trash & recycling out, you are not going to do it better.
Good vibes! I have plenty of those.
Your digiridoo, drum, massage table, whatever. Those don't make the camp function, unless that is the theme.
The fact that your a dj. I can swing a cat by the tail and hit a dozen of those. In fact, I wouldn't tell anyone you're a dj. Ever.

-Get pissy if we don't let you join us. Word gets around, and we will tell other camps to watch out for you if you act like a ass-gasket.

Once you have read all of it, and thoroughly, then you will be ready to start asking more questions.
M*A*S*H 4207th: An army of fun.
I don't care what the borg says: feather-wearers will NOT be served in Rosie's Bar.
When I ask how many burns, I mean at BRC.

Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us! We hope you have a wonderful experience at BM2011. Unfortunately, we cannot host anyone under 21 in our camp environment.

go to LA Burning Man events and maybe become friends with some Burners that will invite you to camp with them:

https://www.facebook.com/#!/laburningman

https://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=101621793075

http://www.laburningman.com/

Or just meet other Burners and create your own camp with them.

This Sunday they will be showing Burn on the Bayou at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood at 5pm. You can meet a lot of local Burners there. They can help you find a camp.

Another question:

Why do you want to join a theme camp rather than just going solo?
It's pointless to walk when it's past time to run.

Guys, guys, she didn't say she wanted to join a camp, she said she's looking to be adopted. I guess she wants to be taken care of 24/7 and have no responsibilities? She offers her cuteness in exchange.

My question is, why did she think this was a good idea?
