Midwives at Bman 2011

Post by Toofunny » Fri Apr 29, 2011 1:27 pm

Hello everyone, I've been going to burning man for 9 years so I'm def familiar with the climate etc. I will be 8 months pregnant this year at the burn. Even tho I shouldn't be going into labor I was hoping to connect with a few midwives who will be on the playa, just in case. Thanks!

Since you've been going 9 years, you've probably seen this on the main site even if you've never needed it 'til now:

Pregnant on the Playa

I know you're looking to hear specifically from midwives, but know also that you can consult the Medical staff at the 3 o' Clock & 9 o' Clock plazas, and near Center Camp (last year it was at about 5:15 & Esplanade and was lit up with a large red cross). If midway between a plaza and Center Camp and you experience an emergency, Center Camp is more direct for being medically evacuated, if it comes to that, but there is also transport between the medical outposts and Center Camp emergency services.

I think I'd also consider buying that helicopter medivac insurance, just in case!

Drink twice as much fluid as you think you need, as dehydration can trigger premature labor. Bring a copy of your prenatal care record with you (from your regular midwife or obstetrician) as well as your insurance card and photo ID, and keep them with you at all times.

And please make sure your tetanus shot is up to date.

Or you could spring for another ticket and bring your midwife with you. Problem solved. Radical self-reliance and all that.

I can only imagine how many people a decade from now will be saying, "I was conceived at Burning Man." Or I suppose even today. Let's see, this will be my 13th year...oh oh.

Thanks for the tips. I knew them already, but thank you. I am sure i will be fine and I have a friend with a plane out there. I am just peeking for midwife goddesses just in case. I am low risk.

You might try contacting Emergency Services Department and checking in with them. They probably have midwives, along with the other flavors of medic. Med tents will be at 3 o'clock plaza, 9 o'clock plaza and of course on the inner circle. You can contact them before hand at 911 at burningman dot com. It's better to contact them now, rather than in August when they are doing the final push to the playa and are crazy busy.

...Not to mention is this her first birth? I wouldnt recommend a first child on playa, as you never know what kind of issues you might come upon during delivery.

The risks outweigh the need to be there I would think.
And I really love being there.
