Rule Breakers

Post by stone » Mon Jul 26, 2004 8:57 am

I, like many of you veteran burners on this forum, live by the motto: IT'S COOL TO FOLLOW THE RULES.

I can't stand it when I see someone breaking the rules. It makes me so angry I want to yell, HEY DUMB ASS DON'T YOU KNOW THE RULES?

For example, every time I see someone driving over 5 miles an hour, I want to call a ranger. These rule breaking dumb asses need to be stopped. And I know many people on this forum agree with me.

We should form a task force that goes out on the playa to find anyone breaking the rules. Then we can stop them and force them to see what dumb asses they are.

Every time I see someone pee on the playa, I want to bash them. It's dark and I can do it. I can get them and knock them over. Then they'd know what that they're dumb asses, and I am right.

When someone is playing their music loud and I want to sleep, I want to cut the power cords for justice. I want justice against those dumb asses who break the rules.

Who wants to form a task force to get these dumb asses?

hey King Shit of the Dumb Asses.

Just remember, when you are "bashing" people and fucking with their belongings in the name of "the Rules"... be careful of the secret collective of people dedicated to stopping ignorance self-important violent fucks just like yourself.

PEACE man. Damn. When are people going to understand that?

Follow the rules yourself!!!!!

Don't take matters into your own hands.

Contact a ranger or a LEO.

Being a vigilante is not going to make the playa a safer or better place for anyone.

I think it's safe to say though that everyone has pee'd on the playa at least once.

Come on, you know there was that when you thought you were gonna go in your pants (if you were wearing any) and just had to whip it out.

As worthy a thread as I've seen in weeks, though it was probably meant for the Zen for Angry White Guys topic area.

killing the messenger

Post by stone » Mon Jul 26, 2004 2:10 pm

Hey Folks - why the double standard?

Where were you all when your good friend Bob recently posted this tidbit (in reference to breaking the rule of not driving during a storm):
I'd pity the pedestrians, but a white-out is perfect cover for slashing tires.
Where were your foul cries then?

What about this comment on the same subject from another pillar named, Tancorix - who posted this friendly item:
Tire Pressure is not a right. Ask the owner of the infamous shark artcar about what happens when you drive like a fool and piss too many people off.
It seems there is selective passive approval of certain forms of vigilantism in this forum.

You guys are so quick to enforce your social justice - holding onto your RULES like a bible... What a wonderful model for the future.

SOANDSO VIOLATED OUR RULES - GET HIM!! Try protecting your bazaar sense of community in other ways besides 'getting' someone.

I wrote the original post in this thread just to see how high-strung you people have become.

You've already snapped, in my opnion.

Shirley, you confused "the rules" with a simple desire that people don't needlessly hurt themselves or others, or require emergency assistance 0.1 to 10.0 miles away from Ranger HQ or DPW.

If you see something wrong going on do not be an ass -- just go up to them and ask them to stop or explain to them what they are doing -- or better yet tell someone. (example) a ranger.

If you were to come up to me while i was breaking a rule and where a total ass to me I wouldnt listen, just laugh and walk away. -- You are also just SCREAMING for a fist fight. If the person is intoxicated they could become very upset with attack you physically, we just dont need that.

There is NO need for YOU to take matters into your own hands -- we have other people to do that.

2 posts and already hostile.
It smells like dirty socks in here. I have Clorox available if anyone needs some. (HINT). Come clean, come clean! Release your consciousness!

As for the tire pressure, that was a last resort by others I wasn't even linked with after the driver had been approached over and over to slow down, it was after he tried to sideswipe vehicles, it was after people allegedly got hurt jumping out of the damn thing's path. At that point rather than hurt the driver or the vehicle for good, a simple valve core removal that can be returned later was a reasonable approach, imho. It's not like someone took a RPG to the thing on the open playa. (also the shark is one of the things that made the DMV crack down this year. The crackdown's been long overdue but the Shark's behavior and especially the tragic loss of Kathy Lampman fueled the drive for this year's changes)

I can see where an outside/ newbie coming in would see the posts a certain way...but revisit this in 45 days and we'll see if your attitude has changed.

There is not. You administering your personal form of justice on the playa MAKES you an asshole. Leave people you don't like alone. If someone is a danger to others, call a ranger or a police officer. Don't fuck with shit that you don't own.
The crackdown's been long overdue...
Tancorix, give us a list of all the other 'crackdowns' you'd like to see on the playa, please. I for one would like to see a crackdown on people who support more crackdowns.

Ever had to drag someone out of a tipped-over porta pottie?

Did you ask them nicely first whether they'd been following the rules?

Thank you.

Sigh....
There is no such list. Just a desire for self-preservation. Death by artcar doesn't exactly appeal to me.

Beyond that, refer to Bob's post.

Being in a tipped-over porta pottie would be punishment enough... or atleast that is what i think, seeing as i am a big time germ-a-phobe... How in the hell does one go about tipping one of those suckers over? And why the hell would you tip one over?

... That is just..odd... Please tell me this did not actually happen!

Playa Justice, my newbie friend, does not mean lawless vigilantism by vilagers with pitchforks and torches. It means working as a community to solve the problem in a peaceful, (dare I say) democratic way.

And let me make this perfectly clear: THE RANGERS ARE NOT COPS! They never have been and never will be. They are not there to hold your hand and do your dirty work. They are an unbiased intermediary that should be called in at the last resort. If you have a problem with someone, it's up to you as a responsible citizen of the city to try to resolve that problem in a way that doesn't have to resort to violence.

For example, a few years back, I camped in a community that got placed next to a camp that played all night "boonsa boonsa" music. The camp should have been placed near the 2 or 10 o'clock but by accident, they were smack in the middle of regular camping. Now, I am a fan of trance and house, but at 4am, I don't need to hear it at 100 decibles 10 feet from my tent. The camp was asked polietly several times to turn it down, and they became defensive and hostile about the whole thing.

So instead of resorting to violence, the community got together and waited until the ravers went to sleep in the early morning. Then we all stood next to their tents and banged pots and pans, fired up air-raid sirens, blew whistles and made as much noise as posssible. The offending camp took the action the right way, had a good laugh and turned down their music the following night.

There you have it: Playa justice.

Now if this was an art car that is recklessly endangering the people around it, action must be taken to stop that immediately. If the driver refuses to comply with the majority of people who have asked nicely to knock it off, its up to the community to do something about it. Removing the tire pressure is one way, pulling the coil wire is another.

Dont go crying to the Rangers every time someone upsets you. Be an adult and aproach the situation in a logical, polite and responsible manner. If that doesnt work, get creative.

You wouldn't, because the porta potties are all tied together to prevent them from being tipped over. Also tipping over one would make an environmental disaster on the playa, prevent people from using that porta-potty and piss off the poor hard-working bastards whose job it is to clean those things for us daily.
