Gifting: Virgin doesnt know what to do!

Post by JBurkeinca » Sat Apr 30, 2011 9:42 pm

Hey guys...

Im gonna be a virgin on the playa and been wanting to find out what to do about gifting... I understand that gifting can be anything, helping people, even looking at people in the eyes!

I want to know if i should bring something at all to gift... like do it yourself bracelets... anything that i would love to hand out!

Do what feels right to you. Save your money if you are thinking of investing in cheap plastic crappy fall apart what nots just so you have something to give. It's more about giving with intention: things that might be useful, might be needed at that precise moment, might bring a smile, or help someone think of you and have a story they'll tell someday. Read here of things people received unexpectedly and how wonderful they thought these things were, aspire to that sort of gift. Last year, someone's bike rack just fell off while he rode by me. He stopped to collect up all his stuff, and I helped him gather it up, opened my little bike tool kit, and we fixed it up well enough to get him on his way. I seriously have little caches of things I bought... "cool" for burning man gifts, and somehow I don't give them away easily, since I want to make them meaningful, like fixing a bike. Gift item stuff sort of lingers in my collection, and I end up giving instead things that are needed.

Quite honestly, coming from a camp sponsor's perspective, get in and participate! Nothing is more rewarding to me than when a person or group of people actually come in and PARTICIPATE! We reward participation and enjoy great memories of those that chose to spend some precious playa time with us.

No one wants your stupid 'gift'. Save your stupid white trash hippie bracelets for white trash hippie art festivals.

Just get to know your camp neighbors, ask for help when you need it, give help when they need it, and keep it really real.

Bob seems to be a grumpy sofa lately, so i will give my perspective on gifting. Dont give because the website tells you its how BM works give like you would in defaultia, because you can and the person you are giving to needs it. Ineeded friends when i cam on here and dammit thats what i got gifted, friends that live several thousand miles away.

its a gift, if you feel you have to give it, its not a gift. dont bring stuff to give away, unless its stuff you want to get is a simple guide.
personally i want to get some cheap crappy bracelets and necklaces and cheap white hippy trash. My cheap white hippy trash friends will get it when i get back here.
What i really want is memories, the random that runs up to me and hugs me when im burnt out, the stranger that invited me to sit and chat in the shade when they see me suffering in the sun. The person who i help saying thanks.

does that help?

If you have the resources or talent, to make an incredible gift, do it! But don't feel obligated. Gifting could be helping your neighbor hold down their tent, or untangling a dress from a bicycle chain.
