Tamarakay, thank you for that article. I can relate to it...a lot. It helps me understand hoe I'm feeling about all of this. Thank you....really.tamarakay wrote:I am glad the bastard is dead, but this article hit home.

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Hmmmmmmm ......
But, it also told of how the CIA is using Tesla's "late workings" for a time machine, to tell people who will someday be president, that, they will be, and, train them to act accordingly.
Dang JK.. you gotta watch who you quote/cite........

What useless bravado.
I'm sure the net is full of these crafted images of triumph and retribution.
"Hell yeah, we got the bastard" followed with calls of "U-S-A. U-S-A..." and all such chest beating messiness.
In the end though we're still licking our wounds. The almost 3000 people in Scranton, DC and New York remain dead. Same for the troops we sent to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Excuse me if I see this as a hollow victory.

I've seen estimates of 16,000 deaths that he is responsible for.
Probably higher, and this war has far more permanent injuries than death.
I have to wonder if an unintended consequence of our presence in the area, has been to remind the middle east populations of the reality of american existence and democracy, such as it is.
In spite of annoying everyone in the area, could being there have sped up the political changes?

I'm afraid the moral compass of the nation is being skewed by the seductive gravitational pull of Blind Patriotism.

hes dead...Al Quaida acknowledged it... The best direction we can go now, is...as Jon Stewart put it..The face of the middle east is no longer bin Laden, but the young people in Egypt, Syria and Libya. Fuck Al Quaida! they are irrelevant, compared to the shit going down in neighboring countries. These kids need our support.

in all seriousness, no snark for one minute...
The arab spring is not about fundamentalist islam, just the opposite, these are people who are tired of the church and the state conspiring thru dogma to control their very being.
it is about Freedom...The muslim brotherhood may be a part of the crowd, but in all estimates, a small part, just as we have fringe parties and groups here.
the west had the reformation and the enlightenment as the "Church" and it's oppressive, stagnant viewpoint and will to dominate was weakened and eventually, as i believe if we were to judge by today, was superceded by secular government, run by, of and for the people.
A democracy.
They are challenging fear, Dictatorship, censorship, brutal police tactics and many more god-awful-they-have-to-just-fucking-deal-with-it situations than most can imagine, and on a day to day basis.
i honestly think the majority of muslims just want to have peace, democracy and freedom, and that includes freedom from their own beliefs as well. Freedom of the press, the simple notion of human rights, the right to be a full citizen, male or female, and to vote.
it amazes me how many people around the world STRUGGLE, even DIE just to place their VOTE.
it's That important to them, why is it not so here? perhaps when one is not afforded the luxury of it just being there, it becomes more precious.
These kids need our support.

yes dougly, every nation has it's own particulars and its impossible to generalize except i think it's safe to say that the countries in question all have suffered under a repressive regime of one manner or another, and one response has been islamic fundamentalism, the other is the popular uprising which cuts across all lines...there are doctors and lawyers marching with mothers and farmers and merchants and clerics and members of all strata of society, except for the ruling status quo.
how we engage now will determine how we will interact in the future.
we should not fall on the wrong side of history on this one.

i dont see how the two can be intrinsically linked....yes, there are elements involved in the uprising, yes, they are going to want a voice, no i do not think they are in the majority.
just my opinion, and i have no credentials, except that i have many friends, who are either in the region or would like to go back to a region when the regime changes.
i consider them very reliable sources, some well placed. I am merely passing on my analysis of said information in hopes of quelling any notions that these uprisings should be something to be afraid of.
my stake in the matter is merely humanitarian, i have no agenda regarding this matter, except to combat ignorance and misinformation.

People are pretty much the same wherever they live. Some have been brought up to hate Hate HATE,,,, and that is the real unfortunate part of our world. Those who trade in hate-oriented ways of thinking are given a microphone and camera for some fucked up reason.
Meanwhile, the people who work hard, treat everybody like they would like to be treated and actually mind their own business, are sucked into this world of contrived differences, classifications and belief systems which claim to be "taking care of them." Given the choice most people want to simply be left alone to do their own thing. I think most people really do not care what their neighbor does or believes unless it interferes with their own activities or beliefs.
Anyone,,, whether elected or appointed,,, who says, "I'll take care of you,,, we're doing this for the good of everyone,,,, nobody left behind,,,, we've gotta be fair about this,,,," is simply trying to make everyone the same. They want individuals to become a herd. MEDIOCRITY RULES! in other words.
All that ever does is drag down the performers, deny aspirations of the motivated and make the under-achievers feel better. Meanwhile, it promotes separations based upon notions of compliance to something contrived, by powers that be, to keep the minions in order.
Humanity, mutual respect, good manners, generosity and personal involvement make a society great for all.
Governments and religions seem to encourage inhumanity, disrespect, selfishness and collective salvation of a controlled society for the benefit of a few.

This deserves to be reposted and so I'm doing so. 3000 is just the "official" total. It's a hell of a lot more than that. The total death counts won't be known for many more years yet as those he maimed and cut lives short have yet to pass.Isotopia wrote:

Meanwhile South of Chicago is a grave that has flowers on it that a teenage boy and a pre-teen girl visit every month....the person buried there doesn't have their name read aloud at Ground Zero, his family doesn't get any benefits from the government, but to those who know he's just as much a murder victim as the others.
As long as I am alive I will not hesitate to remind any and all of these forgotten ones. And so this post is just another step on a long journey to keep that promise.
As far as Osama goes, it gives me great satisfaction that he was not given a proper burial, and that he is not buried where his body would become a shrine to others who seek to follow his path. The fact that one man can generate so much hate amazes me. It's also a testimony to the power we all have to create change...but for the most part it's a power we ignore and we let others blindly lead us.....
I leave my soapbox not giving a damn if anyone objects. I'll give you directions to that tombstone in Illinois if you want to bitch you can go there and tell it to the wind after you confront the loss that several of us live with every day.

I think we have a horrible habit of falling on the wrong side of history whenever possible. Look at South and Central America in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. *shudder*Simon of the Playa wrote:we should not fall on the wrong side of history on this one.
And then there was the propping up of the Shah of Iran back in the 50s, when a more open and democratic and possibly socialist group had taken over. So we got 20 more years of oil, and the reasonable people were squelched and the wild fundamentalist fanatics took over. So then we had a proxy war, by propping up Saddam Hussein. And then he understood that he had, or an ambassador didn't check with the state department and gave him permission to invade Kuwait. And then...
Sometimes we even create the wrong side of history.

A friend of mine died from a heart attack that morning.
It was after my crash and I was not very functional.
I had been trying to call him, but I couldn't remember his name,
I couldn't dial numbers most of the time.
I would forget them before I could dial.
Sometimes I couldn't speak when someone answered the phone.
It's presumed the events caused his attack.
I didn't find out what happened until much later, when I reached his daughter.
I was able to fill in some things she never knew about him, including how she was named.
I have to wonder why I felt the need to call him so much.
I got several calls from the towers that day, presumably shorts.
No one knows.

The icky irony in your statement is that I know that you actually believe this.Anyone,,, whether elected or appointed,,, who says, "I'll take care of you,,, we're doing this for the good of everyone,,,, nobody left behind,,,, we've gotta be fair about this,,,," is simply trying to make everyone the same.
