RV rental San Francisco Sunday return

Post by 0rchid » Thu May 05, 2011 2:07 am

Hi,

I'm coming over from the UK to BM for the first time and am interested in hiring an RV from San Francisco to sleep four people over the period of 28th/29th of August to 4th September (important, as flying back that night).

I'm finding it really hard to locate anywhere in San Francisco that I can return to on a Sunday (4th Sept). Are there any recommendations for hire/return over that period please?

Thanks!

Try craigslist SF. But be honest about where your taking it. RV owners do rent out their RVs, but too many already know about Burning Man.

or you could rough it...and rent a Box Truck. My camp rented an RV one year, and I must have spent an entire 20 minutes in it during the week.
anything worth doing is worth overdoing..

The outfit I rent my RV from, not only is it always closed on Sunday, but will be on Monday the 5th (Labor Day, a legal national holiday) as well. This forces me to rent it until Tuesday. I might suggest you alter your plans. Most rental car agencies are open, however.

Thanks for replies!

I'm not really sure what section of craigslist I'd look under - there doesn't seem to be anything for hiring vehicles, and a search for "hire RV" returns nothing (sorry, we don't use craigslist in the UK so not very familiar).

A box truck is another option for sure, but is there anywhere that would rent one of them for return on Sunday in SF?

Unfortunately we have international flights booked on Sunday night, and changing them would cost a lot of money, so return on Sunday is our only option unless we miss Saturday and return then!

at craigslist look under burning man or burningman. The Reno craigslist usually has quite a few private parties who rent their rvs. You might want to fly in to Reno if you can...

If you go with the box truck plan, let me know and I will get you the phone number and location of a truck rental place that gives discounts to Burners and is open Sunday in the SF Bay area. He also has a pretty inexpensive plan if you don't have time to clean the truck. $99 and he does all the cleaning. You simply bring it back full of fuel.

Box Truck Plan?

Post by Jennet Jourdemayne » Wed May 11, 2011 9:37 am

Hey Dust Devil -- what does your setup look like for the box truck plan. Do you use the truck for shelter, does it get steaming hot, etc. etc.? We got a late start with RV reservations this year, and now I'm thinking of it as an opportunity to finally do BM without. Still, I want to provide for some good comfort too. Thanks,
-JJ

Hey Jennet. I know 1 person & 1 couple who both use box trucks. They sleep inside. Box trucks are excellent for sleeping, since they remain cooler longer in the morning than a tent--sleeping 'til 10 or 11am is usually possible--and they are naturally a little quieter than a tent, not to mention virtually weatherproof. (If you weren't there last year: it did rain twice before the Gates of the event opened, and once after.)

The couple extends their shade canopy off of the end of the box truck; it's very impressive, like a little theatrical stage. The single person raises his own separate shade, but he's handy like that. There's better air flow and coolness if you're not inside between 10am-2pm on a particularly hot day. On a cooler day anything's possible (I napped inside one from 1pm-5pm), although for shade it's a narrow view and a little stuffy; sitting in its shadow might be better than sitting inside. And better than that, of course, is having adjoined or separate shade. :)

One of our camp mates sleeps in our truck after we unload it. Everything in the above post is accurate. My friend who sleeps in our truck has it a little better. He brings two large fans and circulates the air within the truck and it stays pretty comfortable during the day. Our camp has a power grid, so that option will not work for everyone.

We rented a 25 ft box truck last year for the burn (it was huge for just the 3 of us). We slept the first night (monday) in the truck as we were to tired to set up our hexayurt. It was fine and comfy to sleep in, stayed dark. We pulled the big door down to about 4-6 inches from the floor. It was great for the rest of week to sit off the back and chill and also as a great place to change, we strung a rope across it and put a sheet over it for privacy. We have already reserved ours for this year
