What is Burning Man?

i'd be a fool to try to answer that, but i know that to say something is NOT burning man is Not Burning Man, Man.


people who claim to get it almost always never do.


so, what is Burning Man?
for one week it's a chance to go somewhere, out of my regular surroundings, be and create with wildly diverse and incredibly interesting people and truly live without the fear that someone is going to tell me i'm "Doing it" wrong.



no judgement, or at least, much less than the day to day preconceptions and personal bias that infects defaultia.


what is e-playa?


hopefully it's an extension of the playa where people use their real names or at least their "Playa handle" (which to many is realer than most) and take responsibilities for their actions and words and not use the flat open space of freedom as a spot in which to grind axes.

Simon I cant answer what is burning man, but i can answer what it can be and has been for me so far on eplaya.

Its the place i go when i wake up, and leave when i goto sleep
where i have found the most honest and kind people i haven't met
its a place where you can, if you want change your life, or someone else's
its a re-birth of hope and dreams, where i for one have started to remember
my childhood dreams and hopes
Nobody has judged me (yet) or told me i'm wrong (i just dont know is the closest). people who dont even know what i look like know when im not happy and CARE.
I dont what burning man is but i do know who burning man is. All of you here, your burning man.

Burning Man is a piece of art constructed on a blank canvas of a dry lake. It is a form of meta-art. It is an art project made of many other art projects that becomes different the instant you come through the gate.

You have no choice but to participate because once you are there, you become a part of the overall project. "No spectators" isn't what some might think it is because you have no choice in the matter. No matter how hard you might try to remain only a spectator, you can't do it if you are there because you have become an integral part of something larger than you simply by showing up.

I remember the first time I heard about a "rave". It was the 80s and it was a cacophony society event that was illegally using an empty warehouse (without permission.)
And so, I have to conclude, that not only have raves been at burningman pretty much from the get-go, but that raves and burningman are cultural siblings.
