Champagne Lounge 2011
Hey Everyone!
I am from the Champagne Lounge theme camp, We started a Kickstarter page to raise money for our Open-Mic Happy Hour and there is only about a week left! I know some of you on here in the past have spoken out against Theme Camps seeking out money this way, but we are a small camp and if we want to expand this is our only option!
We are trying to raise the funds to build a stage, buy a sound system, and musical instruments to played by everyone and anyone! This stuff is pretty expensive when you take into account we still need to get over 25 cases of Champagne! So every little bit help, even a $1!!
So please at least go over to our kickstarter page and check it, maybe forward it to anyone you know who might be interested in helping!
Thanks a lot for all your help and kind understanding!

Fund your own fucking camp like the rest of us do. If you can't afford it, don't do it. Or do something smaller that you can afford. Radical Self Reliance, remember?

it is not begging, when you're offering something in return...
as for you funding your own camp, good for you! My camp on the other hand is using our radical self reliance to organize several fundraisers for our camp. this is just one of those.
There is no reason for you people to get so hurt over this, if you do not approve just don't contribute. But don't attack me for trying...
as for the pony, that would be awesome.

Re: ...
Of course it's begging. BM is not a TRADING economy, it is a GIFTING economy.Magiccannoncat wrote:it is not begging, when you're offering something in return...
So, if you're bringing a camp that is going to be GIFTING Champaign, aren't you just selling tickets for drinks before you get to the playa?
Please don't take this personally, I feel exactly the same way about ANY PRIVATE CAMP that begs for money to build or pay for their whatever it is they are "contributing". I think it is a perversion of the use of Kickstarter for Burning Man.

I agree. It is like buying a gift for yourself or in this case the community buying a gift for itself.Of course I realize I am on the wrong side of history on this one as more and more new camps find Kickstarter an easy way to gather funds for bigger and better things. It will not be long until the self financed camps will become a quaint oddity.
Be careful. You can spend all your money in there..............................Oriental Visitor

DAMMIT JK! Trying to keep my mouth shut here. What I edited out above was pretty mild compared to your initial response.
But,,,, man oh man,,,, ya know,,,, we know individual campers that bust their ass ALL YEAR LONG to go as individuals! I'm working on a little project to support the camp year-round and have never asked anybody for anything. I have many people who WANT to GIVE their time and treasure. But not because I ever asked. I give all I can to our little piece of heaven for one week out of the year. I have no expectations and thus find myself eternally grateful for the GIFTS our camp receives from those who deem us worthy of the effort.

The problem is going to be remembering which ones they are when you see them on the playa. I suggest giving them buttons (badges?) that say "No Hugs"> you could probably do a red slash through a "((()))" so that it's internationally understood (on the internet).graidawg wrote:JK dpesn't like hugs? dammit thats 2 people i am going to have to give handshakes too.

Understand that I am not against collecting camp dues from members, and I am not against Kickstarter for funding art projects. And I don't consider a mutant vehicle an art project.zorro sings wrote:I agree. It is like buying a gift for yourself or in this case the community buying a gift for itself.Of course I realize I am on the wrong side of history on this one as more and more new camps find Kickstarter an easy way to gather funds for bigger and better things. It will not be long until the self financed camps will become a quaint oddity.

I'm against small "theme" (or not) camps using Kickstarter to raise money.
IMO it is begging. As Graidawg said, why not be radically self-reliant and join forces with another group that already has the infrastructure you're lacking and you can contribute what you already have to them as well? Or use camp dues/personal funds to fund this dream of yours? That's what most people do.
I'm ALL for making your own camp doing your own thing and giving your gifts however you want to give them...but don't ask me to pay for it.
By refusing to bend somewhat and join someone else with existing mic/stage facilities insisting you have to have your own it feels as if (IMO) you're setting the camp up as an ego stroke to yourself. Something that you can point at and say *I/we* did that. If it's not about an ego trip, why not join a camp that already has a mic and stage and instruments? There must be at least several of them out there!
Maybe I'm just feeling snarky but this just blows my mind. Sorry. It's like me asking you for money so I can print up stickers with my logo on it as my gift to give to people. Don't think so.

While I ask for donations of art for the HFWA, I would never ask for money. Donating art is paticipatory, cash makes me a whore. I have no idea exactly how much I've sunk into that project, but it is a pretty penny.
I felt odd last year taking the art grant cash for my Regional NoCostCo. That, I have kept receipts for. (sort of a HFWA but with costumes and gear)

Fundraising, in the way I believe it's generally used for BM IMO, is when you're raising funds for a non-profit, selfless purpose. Say, the 2011 temple. Will those people get to keep large, costly items for themselves after raising $20k? No, it's going to be set up for a week for thousands to enjoy and then burned for thousands to see.
Commerce is when you're going to get something material out of it.
Of course, fundraising for something non-profitish and doing said non-profit activity DOES give you something...the wonderful feeling of giving something to others. Additionally, I'm sure that artists and leads/designers of large art projects probably get some great street cred and resume gold stars for having done those activities.
Usually, however, when you fund raise for something non-profit you don't get to keep a stage, instruments and mic/sound equipment as your own personal property.
And hey, Goathead, that IS really snarky for me!
It just really feels as if this type of fund raising scenario is going to be accepted I should ask everyone for money for MY personal gifting idea and then claim all the street cred for it. Bleargh!
I think how Anti M accepts and requests for art donations is just spot on. As are bars on the playa that appreciate and accept donations of libations. Or Playa Costume "shops" that ask for donations of neat clothing and then turn around and pass them on.

You hit the nail right on the head. I have been trying to figure out exactly what it is that struck me as so wrong about kickstarter for personal camps, and you said it perfectly.Minxy wrote:Fundraising, in the way I believe it's generally used for BM IMO, is when you're raising funds for a non-profit, selfless purpose.
