Coming to my first Burning Man from NYC this year!

Post by JCakes » Wed Jan 19, 2011 4:09 pm

Hey, I live in New York and I'm coming to Burning Man!!!

I'm getting involved with such epic awesome crews up here such as Kostume Kult and Disorient, as well as digging my way deep into as much counter culture madness here as possible.

I'm an avid partier, music lover, Kostume fanatic, and all around rabble rowser.

I'm a full time graduate student at The New School getting my masters in Nonprofit Management. I guess I just have a passion for stuff that's about participation and growth rather than commercialization.

Until recently I was also a full time firefighter and EMT, skills which I'm hoping I can use to contribute to the safety and health of other burners out on the playa this year. I'll be bringing a full EMT kit with plenty of refills and possibly IVs, I have to look up Nevada reciprocity laws.

Anyways, can't wait.

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Welcome, JCakes! Anyone who enjoys the term "rabble rouser" is okay by me.

Emergency Medical Services would surely be able to use you if you wanted to volunteer (formally). Medical shifts are either 8 or 12 hours--don't know about fire shifts--so if you go this route, be careful not to overcommit (t's a very common regret among first timers).

Or you could operate independently, based on your comfort level with Nevada law. I've seen a lot of guerilla aid out there.

ESD (Department of Emergency Services) shifts are 6 hours, I'm pretty sure, and you have to commit to a shift on Burn Day.
In Nevada, I believe you are covered by a good samaritan law, I'm pretty damn sure you are, but I'm out of touch with the whole thing being no longer figuratively an ESD Widow. Rest assured that the fire and medical corps are filled with people from all over, Colorado, Washington State, California, and the fire chief used to work for the New York Port Authority. So, it's a very real option for you if your certs are current.

Last year the medical shifts were all 8 hours or 12 hours. It's the fire shifts I know nothing about.

There was indeed a mandatory shift Burn weekend, but it didn't have to be Burn Day (although that's what I went for). Friday or Sunday would also have worked.

Of course, it could all change this year. :D

Okay, you're information is more current than mine.
I suspect that the shifts would be the same (and mental health and com, as well.) At some point there has to be simplification.
