1776 Costume Camp, Still Accepting Applications!

This is our loving vision of putting costume themes on steroids! 1776 is now totally costume-based. (Sexy!) Yes, we still have gag reenactments, history, roaming celebrations, debates, nostalgic music and movies too.

I hope this site shows everyone how dedicated the '76ers are to this project. The themes are SO strong at our camp. It really will be an other worldly dream! Far from a yuppie camp; we always need more costume snobs. Organize the Chaos; organize the sex; organize the bling; organize the love. Theme baby, theme.

My idea is to have camps where we all dress up as:
colonialists and redcoats on monday
indians and cavalry on tuesday
civil war soldiers on wednesday
WWII soldiers, Nazis, and Japs on thursay
Communists and nukes on friday
and terrorists and oil execs on saturday

We can show cool movies for each days era too, have funny ballots on really old fashioned political agendas, have humorous political debates on subjects that people don't even remember today, and themed food for each era.

There is so much to work with here... I know there are history people out there who would love to reenact all sorts of bogus stuff.

Here's the list of themes for each day of BM:

It's awesome except for the links you give for costumes. "Spicy legs?" I thought the idea was authenticity. I'm the "costume snob" you refer to, and that is some bulllsheeeet. There's insane amounts of historical costuming references out there without encouraging further use of poorly constructed, shoddy packaged "sexy" costumes.

That said, I hope some people do keep what I thought was the spirit of the camp, because I love me some historical re-enacting and dress-up.

Sweet idea on the tier. Looks like Monday parade is planned then. People also want to "roll their own" with the constitution on day 1. Smoke the constitution.

That's important though: we need more humor and fun to complement the serious attention to detail like the guy explaining in the video. It's the ying/yang of the Art form.

Oooh Flapper Girl! The Guilded age and up tends to be easier and more fun for us girls...Though anyone got a hoop skirt? I know the playa's got lots of 'petticoats' but I guarantee The DAR wouldn't be caught dead dress like that

I have a hoop skirt, although it was made into a MOOP skirt costume a while back (trash bag ruffles and baby wipe flounces).

Have to disagree about the 20s being easier and more fun - unless you naturally fit the desired boyish figure of the time.

I have petticoats, hoopskirts, panniers, bumrolls, lobster tails, crinolines, etc. but they're cumbersome to pack and use the loos in.

C.f.M.- I agree to a point, but remember the authentic traditional dress, from stays out, where actually about 12lbs of clothing, that's no so fun to wear even in the winter, so certainly not in the heat. And as you said, using the loos won't be fun. Chamber pots anyone?

Follow up to the last post: The US constitution was adopted on July 4th, 1776; it was signed over the following month; do the research. Those who claim the date pertains to a different agenda are over-zealous in the power of such efforts. I also remind you that the American Revolution was a wig movement, which opposed that class organization manifested in Britain. Once again, a broader knowledge base is required for these points.

Good eye: the Declaration was 1776, not the Constitution. However, the original Declaration of War was at Mecklenburg in 1775, but only pertained to N. Carolina.

The important point is that the truths were more than self-evident, as the majority of the signers from 1775 died.

Perhaps this is the real concept about the 1776 camp: there is a specific historical context, and not a postmodern, dadaist, arbitrary concept. This is one of the many reasons why 20th century culture that seeks meaning in non-reason has failed:

While the critique of Western Civilization's 2 values of affluence and personal privacy are valid, the escape into non-reason the counter culture created lead us nowhere. If anything the counter-culture lead to despair that it was merely a function of complacent consumer culture. Larry Harvey makes this last point quite explicitly. How then do we combine specific, meaningful culture with valid critique of modern America?

We get back to the beginning; the real beginning.

1776 begs the question: "Do burners have the fortitude to totally remake society, or is Burning Man merely an escape from a system set in stone?"
