Ooh, ooh! If someone wants to transport some art from the east bay...
cigar boxes or drawers? maybe with more specifics, I can even make you a few.
I have lumber and staplers.. masonite? how thick, how big?
I can haul stuff from here to the playa, I'll be making two trips out again this year, so, if someone can drop stuff off here, I can take it the rest of the way.
I've been using masonite at 18 by12, and cutting it down to strengthen the back of two or so cigar boxes in order to get a larger inside. I think it's quarter inch or 3/8s thick. Hm. size can vary. say from six inches to a side to two feet. I don't need these as emergency. The schlepping is complicated.
I'm putting it out there, but I don't know how fast I'll use up my supply and where I'd store too many extra.
Thank you.
ok well, lemme know.
I can make boxes pretty fast, then, it's just getting them there.

You know, I have some low RPM, high torque AC gearmotors...
I'll excavate the shelf and check speeds in the in the morning.
If it's not low enough, it's easy to make a belt driven reduction drive with sheaves and round stock Mcmaster-Carr. Probably want a roller thrust bearing to bear the beacon ($4 http://www.mcmaster.com/#5909k41/=cdpdxs). Handles 2 tons. Mount a halogen work light with a dimmer and you're enlightened. Mcmaster is like Grainger but with more stuff and way more affordable AND they sell to anyone. No business or account requirements.

For getting the power to the rotating beacon (without tangling up wires), try a two conductor rotary electrical connector:

Dimensions below for model 230

They're mfg'd by Mercotac. I have ordered many of these from them and they make the impossible possible. Model 205 handles 4 amps, model 230 does 30 amps. Dont know what your beacon draws.

http://www.mercotac.com/html/230.html

Sounds like a really cool project.

I'll dig out those gearmotors.

The beacon would be driven by a simple side drive (wheel edge to wheel edge).
Lets see if my crude ASCII drawing works... ;) (edge on view)

(=======)(==) Drive wheel
Beacon ......... |
Wheel ......... |#|
................... |#| Motor

(damn... had to use periods to force the positions to stick)

Was thinking of mounting the drive wheel+motor on a spring loaded arm to keep it against the beacon wheel. The reason I don't have a simple axle to drive on the beacon is that I'm using a large "lazy susan" bearing. The light will shine up from the non-moving base and be bent 90 by a mirror in the top part. No having to deal with twisting wires to the light that way. :)

Badger, that's way better.
The reduction is already there. Small driver, large driven. Opens up more motor possibilities.
The stationary light and rotating mirror really are an elegant solution.

*Bow* Thank you. :)

Yeah, if the ratio is not right, I simply change the size of the drive wheel and then just use the controller to fiddle with the speed. Since it's a "lighthouse", the speed does not have to be high at all, so even a semi weak motor can put all it's power towards torque. :)

I went digging out in the shop this morning, it's a fuckball out there.

Badger, I found a kick ass 120VAC gearmotor for ya. 125 RPM. If you go with a 10:1 reduction (2in drive wheel, 20in beacon turntable) it'll give you 12.5 RPM, or a period of about 5 seconds between revolutions.

Found lotsa other great stuff that's pictured below.
Take my shit, please!

Image
Pillow blocks, shaft collars, drive chain & sprockets, AC gearmotors. I've got a few more of those spherical rod ends.

Image
Weather (and dust!) proof multi pin connectors. Mil-spec Amphenol, Cannon, ITT, and some shiny Japanese ones (might be stainless but probably nickel plated brass). From 1 pin to 36 pin. Some are 1-2 amp, the bigger ones can handle 10-50 amps depending on size.

Image
Parker quick disconnects, The big one is 3/4" NPT. Others are 3/8, 1/2...
I have a crate of hydraulic drylock QD's (both sides have spring loaded auto checks so your juices won't spew). They're down @ mah storage unit.

Image
Baldor variable frequency drive (also called an AC drive). Three phase but you can hook up to 240VAC single phase and get three phase out at a bit less than nameplate specs (derated due to the phase shift).

Image
Pneumatic regulators. The control pendant is MINE and I'm not giving it up without a fight :)

Image
Rainbird solenoid sprinkler valves with easy connect modular manifold tees. I think they're 24VAC, might be DC. I'll check if someone wants em.

Image
Helmets. Perfect protection for Jojo the two headed boy.

Image
Switchbox originally for running a bank of solenoid valves. I used it for a multi que firing box for firework shows. I upgraded to wireless so take it. Lotsa good switches. The bank on the right are locking handle types, you have to pull up on the bat handle to allow operation. No more accidental flame effects when your buddy drunkenly flaps his arms.

Image
Panel mount circuit breakers. Lotsa them below 5 amps, at least 1 is 15 amp.

Image
Control station with 30mm oil-tight buttons and emergency slam switch.

Image
12VDC 4-port 3-way solenoid valves. I have 4. Model 240R2, right diagram shows flow at rest and energized.

Image
Tap-Rite keg tap. Has keg flange connector, CO2 regulator, and pour tap. The tap handle is gone but the stud is threaded 3/8-16 so you can pick up a tap (the threading kind...) and use whatever you want as a handle. If you take this, please try it out before the playa. Might need some seals which are available from Tap-Rite or a restraunt supply house.

Image
These are the two gas flamethrowers I mentioned earlier. These are staying right here but shown for the benefit of burners who might see one of these at a garage sale. If so, buy it! They are incredible, especially when modified...

Image
This is Chico the gnome. Chico says take the shit, just take it!

I might have to rent a Ryder to haul stuff out there. PM me if you want to pick up. Also PM me if you want something but live on another planet. We can work out shipping or hitch up the carrier pigeons.

I'm going to try to get down to storage soon. More hydraulic valves & cylinders, high voltage power supplies, scientific instruments, gas regulators, sheaves, pulleys, axles, proximity and photosensors, more timing gears with notched belts, even a hydrogen generator (that I can't find info on).

I really hope someone can use this stuff. I'd rather get it into the hands of some crafty bastards who'll build crazy contraptions and very dangerous things than sell it for pennies on the dollar.

It seems to be certain bigger items that are worth selling.
Priobably stuff few individuals can use.

I must admit I'm MUCH more familiar with DC motors than I am with AC ones. Do I need a contoller with this, pop on a dimmer switch, or just hook it up to the mains with a normal AC light switch?

Also, how hard would it be to get it to me, or do I need to make a road trip? :)

EDIT: Now that I'm looking again, I could put those pillow blocks to good use also for an upcoming project that in the planning stage. :)

I've got a bit of high dollar stuff that I have to get off my arse and do something about. The stuff I'm offering up is basically all the fiddly bits that overwhelm surplus store buyers into lowballing, "We're going to have to spend days sorting...". And it's all too true on the limited user base. I may try to offload a bunch to one of the Portland hackerspace collectives. Maybe Survival Research Laboratories. Gotta love that V8 powered fully automatic 2x4 launcher.

Badger,
AC is EZ. Just a three prong cord and a switch will do it. I have a small AC solid state 'dimmer'. It's made for fan motor speed control. The motor on the lower left has a rheostat wired in for speed control. I'll test it to be sure it's ok. It might be a better choice weight wise as well.

Where are you located? I'm about 45 minutes west of Portland.

Yeah, that dial did catch my eye... :)
I figure that lightswitch dimmer I have laying around wouldn't do the trick since I'm sure the motor would draw more amps that it could handle. :)

I'm about 40 miles north of San Francisco. (Petaluma)

No 480?
Rats.
I found this really loud siren.

If you have any, I need a bunch of 240 dimmers/ rheostats, and some in 120.
The local places emptied out all that when they moved.
I'm willing to pay for them too.

Anything you want to market, contact me off here and I'll get advice from the people I know.
Some little pieces go for 50K when factories need them.
Certain transformers, controllers, even rebuildable.
I'm no expert, but I know who is.
They can tell you who uses what, and real value.
It's a matter of need and rarity.

Shovelling through photos on an old hard drive I found the following photos.
I designed and built this copper electrodeposition workstation for an Intel research program on using copper to fill the vias instead of aluminum. Vias are the 'trenches' etched into the surface of silicon wafers to make integrated circuits, chips.
All I did was build the thing but the researchers who used it came up with something novel. Anyone remember the Intel Coppermine CPU's? Using copper allowed more current and thus more power to increase CPU speeds dramatically.
The 200mm Si wafer sits in the large chuck that is above the plating tank. It would submerge the wafer etched side down into about an inch of solution. The plating solution was pumped from directly below and into the face of the now sipnning wafer. The bath had a copper cathode and the anode was the wafer to facilitate plating.
This was in THE YEAR 2000 (sounds so dramatic...).
This was about the time I seem to have have contracted electromechanical OCD and started bringing home systems and components in disturbing quantities...
Enjoy!

Image
Electrical block diagram of the system. Visio rocks.

Image
Overall view. The column is a stepper motor driven linear actuator to lower / raise the wafer chuck. The stepper gives accuracy to about 0.0005" with microstepping.

Image
Work deck. The guns on the right are for DI H2O and dry N2.

ImagePump deck. All fluid lines and fittings are PVDF, Teflon, FEP, Tefzel, etc. The plating solution is sulfuric acid with special sauce.

ImageThe control head. I wish I'd gone to a sign shop and had them make nameplates instead of the hinky labeler tape.

Image
The wafer chuck. The wire contact ring is titanium to resist the plating solution. The annular screws on the lower periphery are titanium as well. $14 each (back in THE YEAR 2000...).

ImageThe main control board. I love DIN rail stuff. I extended wiring of the harness so that the board could be removed for live troubleshooting.

I'd like to do something like this for the playa but use pea soup instead of acid and pita bread or tortillas instead of silicon wafers.

I'd also like to bring an oven and the electric trap launcher so I could bake some tasty treats and launch them to the crowd that would inevitably gather upon smelling the delicious scents wafting out of my box ( ).

"Come on over this weekend. We're taking over the world..."

Say, can someburny tell me what photo sharing place is easier than flickr? It gets old fast having to open each photo page separately to cut n paste the code. I'm on dial-up (@ 21.6kbps) so every click can be an eternity. I guess it's a small price to pay to live out here but I get impatient...
I'm thinking maybe I can send a smoke signal to my ISP and see if they have an FTP server and if they have server space. Been so long I can't remember.

AntiM, Duder, let me know what you like & where to send it.

I have a huge amount of the reversible black & silver, nearly the whole 20-yd spool I think...
HUzzah! The ribbon arrived, it is stunning. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

That reminded me to go look in the mailroom for my own ribbon!

It's here! It's very pretty. I love that there's a little black w/ the green & gold, because I'm thinking of trimming something black with it, & now I'm certain it will make visual sense if I do. And the card is so kind.

Thank you, MyDearFriend!
