Making a manual wheelchair playa ready
Any ideas on how to make my wheelchair ready for the playa? It already has solid rubber treaded big tires on the back wheels, but the front ones are scooter wheels on origional frog legs shocks. This is my first time although I have attended a regional event.

The playa floor can be nasty. The two biggest problems are washboarding and dust drifts. The washboarding may not be as bad this year, more water on the playa may mean that the tracks worn last year may have a chance to even up. With 50,000 attending this year the dust is inevitable.

I have seen
An attachment that basically lifts the front casters off the ground and the weight is taken on a bicycle wheel, basically turning it into a trike simiular to the config of racing bikes. I wonder if it would be possible to make one?

I don't have those handy capabilities. They do make gizmos that attach to your chair, a third wheel deal that you can then use like an arm bike, and then you can take them off. I forget what they are called. But a friend of mine was convinced that his friend the welder could have made me one. Never got anywhere, I guess I didn't push. If you go that route, I'd suggest reverse engineering, if possible. Of course, you might then find that it's nonsense and that you could do it better--so many improvements come from users, rather than engineers.

Stricker lomo looks interesting for ideas at least. I don't know about prices. they have a few options for adding a front third wheel. even a hub motor.

looks like a kiddie bike frame head tube and fork reversed, maybe 16" wheel? then a v of frame coming off that, are those shocks? or just a way to adjust the length? (edit: I guess you'd want shocks there, or else the wheelchair frame might get bent.) and attach it to the chair front somehow. I wish I had a place to play with welding.
