Welcome to the ePlaya!!worksofheart wrote:I LOVE how that sounds "come home"...definitely hope the experience feels like a homecoming!Work, family and life conspire against me for 2011...but 2012 will be transcendent!
It seems that work and family always work against my attending. Book the time off early. Stash something for your burn every day (1 less coffee, pack of smokes, etc). I aim for about $25 a week, and a bit more if I feel flush that day.
Don't let the travel distance stand in your way either! I travel 3 days to BRC (6 hrs just to get to the US border). It is doable.
Get in touch with your local burner group. They will be invaluable for ideas, advice, etc. http://regionals.burningman.com/us_fl.html
Good luck!!
See ya on the playa.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
I expect that it will definitely be a dusty and interesting camping trip (should I mention that I've never camped??)...hence a whole year to prepare! lol! As for being transcendent...the fact that I AM GOING is transcendent in and of itself..it's one of those choices that I expect will be life-altering to some extent...and in a goooood way!
Already that y'all are offering an open-armed welcome speaks volumes!
Have a beautiful day!!

Well now you will have a whole year to go on some camping trips and prepare yourself.worksofheart wrote: I expect that it will definitely be a dusty and interesting camping trip (should I mention that I've never camped??)...hence a whole year to prepare! lol!

What, no mosquitoes?? Such a place exists??? It's too early to tell, but I THINK I will happily trade mosquitoes for Playa dust...
And yes, some camping experience will be gained in the next year in the hopes of (at the very least) being able to construct some sort of shelter! lol! A camping-experienced fellow noob should be making the journey with me, so there is that!

The Nevada desert has the biggest mosquito's I've ever seen. Although none on the playa thankfuly. you live in a great place to test your equiptment for heavy rain and. High wind. Set up camp pre playa and see if your stuff is leak proof and won't blow away. Winds can be a constant 25 mph with 70 mph gust or just blow 5-10 mph all day long. If you don't test your stuff the playa most certianly will.

We used bent re-bar to keep our stuff down which worked really well. We also make them with solar lights to make them noticeable at night so we did not walk into them.jerroc wrote:The Nevada desert has the biggest mosquito's I've ever seen. Perhaps a sandy beach during stormy weather? Lots of reading happening here to determine the best way to camp...it's a little overwhelming! Particularly in light of the fact that flying seems to be the best means of getting there but limits what we can bring...eeeep! Or am I overthinking? How simply can a Playa appropriate camp actually be done?jerroc wrote:The Nevada desert has the biggest mosquito's I've ever seen. You have to make sure you have enough food, water and shelter for the week. We had a small pickup last year (as shown below) but we managed to fit all our stuff in it for the week for three peopleworksofheart wrote:Perhaps a sandy beach during stormy weather? The back seats was a little full too! But we managed to fit a person (and Mickey) in there for the 4 hour drive

Haha, probably not... I have been told by others and read in the past that as we get closer to Burning Man time you may have trouble finding suitable vehicles to rent near Reno, mostly due to other Burners renting them to get to the Playa, and some places don't like to rent to Burners because the cars come back covered inside and out in Playa dust! I don't know if that is still going on. I read that wayyyyy back in 2009.worksofheart wrote:Hmm...wonder if I can check a small pickup as baggage...??chris2010 wrote:

I thoguht they were crazy on the East Coast until I was in Minnesota in spring. Forget any definition of what you think a mosquito is, how big, how many or how aggressive until you go there.chris2010 wrote:I think the mosquito should be the Stat Bird here in Florida!!!

I cannot fathom mosquitoes bigger or more aggressive than Floridian ones! Remind me to stay clear of Minnesota if that's the case!Super Evil Brian wrote:I thoguht they were crazy on the East Coast until I was in Minnesota in spring. I agree, also we have the biting Flys, Scorpions, and Fire Ants! I stopped to take pics last weekend and got my feet and leg covered in fire ants!worksofheart wrote:I cannot fathom mosquitoes bigger or more aggressive than Floridian ones! I was dumb enough to forget insect repellent at dusk in a state forest.worksofheart wrote:I cannot fathom mosquitoes bigger or more aggressive than Floridian ones! Although, I walked across the Mississippi River on a wooden plank a few times. I could see clear to the bottom as well.

Eep! Not the thing to forget! Though, even covered in repellant, we were recently hotly pursued by a mob of mosquitoes while hiking a state forest, vicious little buggers.Super Evil Brian wrote: I was dumb enough to forget insect repellent at dusk in a state forest.![]()

As for walking the plank...gator free and clear water sounds good! Or at least one or the other...gator filled dark water has little appeal!
I reckon this means I can knock "insect repellant" off of my things-I-need-for-the-Playa list?
