Hello fellow Florida burners. This year will be my virgin burn also. I'm in the Tampa Bay area and will be driving (solo, so far) very comfortably in a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan. I may have room for 1 and could definitely use help with gas expenses, if anyone's interested. See you on the playa :D
Hugs and Hallucinations!!

Hello fellow Floridian! I am in Citrus too! I don't see that many people from our area that go to Burning Man. This will be my Second year. Sorry to hear you will not be able to attend this year, but I hope to see you on the Playa next year! :)

Burners far and wide...the BM Rideshare page will be up and running in a few days...post your ride needs there:

http://rideshare.burningman.com

Also connect with your local regional groups so you can actually meet a potential rider/driver face-to-face.

http://regionals.burningman.com/
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Hmmm...not many burners from our area...can't begin to imagine why...lol! I'm curious how you travel...car or plane? In process of figuring out logistics and making a "plan". I will be at Camp Envy this year...living vicariously!

And for my fellow Floridians...have you had any luck with the regionals? The info here on the site for Florida seems to be from 2008. Anybody ever go to the "unofficial" afterburn in Lakeland?

I am going by plane this year :) I am flying out of Tampa. I will be landing in Sacramento and meeting up with my friends who are also going to Burning Man. From Sacramento we will drive to Burning Man, its about a 4 hour drive to the Playa! :) Also about 2 weeks before my trip I will be sending (via UPS) a lot of my Playa wears, lights and other items to my friends house in Sacramento so I don't have to lug it through the airport (or try to explain what it is to the TSA).

Have you given any thought about what your going to do?

Either it's an educated guess, or else he's desperately hoping it will be.

Lots of thought...not many conclusions just yet...the price of gas is making flying look appealing...and limited amounts of baggage on planes are making driving appealing....I'm so confused! lol! I do have some time to figure it out...my potential fellow traveller suggested a Greyhound...that idea I'm not so sure of!

How was your driving experience?

Flying seems to be cheaper unless you have a group that is going then you can split the cost of gas! If you fly you can try shipping your stuff out before you get there like I do, but you need someone to receive it.

I am not sure myself what I am going to do next year. My friend in California may not be going in 2012, so I may have to find another way to get to Burning Man, but thats still over a year away...

I never thought about Greyhound.... thats something to think about...

Amtrak(.com) allows even more baggage than Greyhound, though the train's route is sometimes too circuitous, and you might still need to either meet up with someone else at Reno or another Western city, or rent a vehicle for the last 100 miles+.

Just looked into it...circuitous to say the least...Florida to DC to Reno...and four (or maybe it was three?) days...for not much less than a plane ticket...same with Greyhound $300 and 2.5 days vs. $400 for a plane ticket and same day arrival...methinks flying might be the way to go...unless I offer a rideshare to split gas...

Good thing there's plenty of time to decide....but man-oh-man, all this research makes me long to go THIS year!

So go! Who knows, there's not guarantee Burning Man will even be around in 2012.

True, the world my end on October 21. This could be the very last chance.

Would that I could this year! Damn life for getting in the way of finding my way "home"!

I refuse to be raptured before my first burn...so as far as I'm concerned, the world can't end until 12.21.12. Until then...Camp Envy in 2011 and Playa thereafter!

this will be my first year so have no true-tried way...we are however set to fly from Orlando direct to San Fran to pickup our transportation/housing and camping overnight Sunday near Reno then driving to the gates early Monday morning.

Florida has a HUGE burner population - well, maybe not huge, but there's loads of them all over the state.

Lakeland has Preheat and Afterburn as regionals.

Have you had trouble finding transportation? I know some places don't like to rent to Burners... I may have to do that next year, so I want to find good places to rent from...

No trouble at all. Only thing we had to concern ourselves with was the cost and which city to travel from.

I have wanted to go to Preheat and Afterburns, but I can never seem to get the time off from work :P I am going to try for the Afterburn this year.

All you really have to remember is to be upfront with them about going to BM and they will let you know if they have availability for that. Nobody wants to miss out on profits and it seemed like most were fine with us going to BM so long as we paid the extra deposit or fee.

How much of an extra deposit / fee?

It varied from $500-$2000. Average was about $1500, so just depends on the place and the distance from Reno. The closer to Reno the higher it was. :D

YIKES!! I wasn't prepared for that number! I've also read a bit about renting a Uhaul both as transport and shelter...do you see a lot of that on the Playa?

I saw a lot of Uhauls but just for transportation. I think they would get too hot to be used as shelter during the day. The ones I did see people in had AC in them, and a generator running them.
