Must have just been the way I read and interpreted it then. I was thinking the shade structure and whatnot were for the general theme camp, as opposed to only sheltering the art project.

For what it's worth, the project sounds pretty interesting and I'm sure I'll stop by to participate.

Funds are fungible.

With BMORG giving their blessing, even promoting programs like kickstarter, it reminds me of what some cities do to assure there are vendors and activities to keep the event interesting.

It is sort of like a second tier grant if BMORG doesn't feel your event/art is worth a grant, they now send you to KS with their blessing.

I'll say it again, funds are fungible. If we were to start a KS project to serve root beer floats, we would need a shade structure, freezer, transpottation to get this stuff to the playa, etc. All of which are necessary for us to provide our gift to the playa. But, we would be personally using all of the above for our personal enjoyment when we aren't handing out floats.

Just saying...

Wasn't there some sort of big to-do years ago about the community choosing who got art grants? BMORG 2.0 or something?

That was part of the Paper Man episode was it not? But the larger discussion was whether the org was going to emphasize art over interactivity. Maybe not in those exact terms, but it was something like that. Although I may be wrong.

I can't remember the details, cause I read about it a while ago, but I thought it was about fighting the perceived top-down control of what art was and wasn't worthy of grant money. Something about Larry's friends being the ones who could get it...

I like the idea that there's an outlet to let the community fund other people's art projects, I also think that advertising through the BM channels (whether over Eplaya or the JRS newsletter etc) is no big deal.

Besides, with kickstarter we get to watch artists with overinflated egos have their dreams crushed online. You know, when someone thinks they can get 100k in a couple months to build a giant sculpture...

It was called BORG 2 and was led by Chicken John, among others. Some money was released to be voted on by "the community" with some sort of bet as to which projects were more successful, those selected by the LLC people or those selected by the BORG2. Iircc, the BORG2 lost.

Ahh, BORG2. It was great fun. Even though Chicken John (who started the whole thing) ended up getting voted out! The perils of a democracy!

It was the year of my first playa art piece, Giant Pickup Sticks.

Chicken John was voted off the island. That's amusing.

Money; the shameful truth buried deep within Burning Man's social structure.
