Ohio Virgin via Vegas. Officially heading north!
Hey folks!
My name is Chris and I'm officially heading to BRC for the first time this year. Recently moved to Vegas from Ohio and decided there's no way I can pass up this opportunity after trying to get to BM for a few years now. Like many first timers, I'm at a loss of words in terms of the magnitude of expectations and thoughts zooming through my head. I'm also wondering if anyone can direct me to the right forum for trying to find a rideshare from Vegas? My car has broken down twice in the last month and I'm not sure I trust it to make the trip. Thanks and see you in a few months

Hi Henry,
There's an awesome group of Las Vegans that populate Burning Man. Make contact with them thru: http://regionals.burningman.com/us_nv_lv.html.
Besides the local group, you may try to score a ride thru Craigslist and our own Rideshare link that will go hot in a week or so at: http://rideshare.burningman.com.
In the meantime, get yourself prepared...read everything here you can, make lists, equip yourself to adequately make it thru a very intense week in a very intense environment.

Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Definitely check out the LV Burner Group...they have a FB page but I don't have the link right now to post. Just do a FB search for Lucky Lady Lucy and you should find us and the great project that is going on...
There's a meet and greet every Monday night at the Artisan Boutique Hotel at I-15 and Sahara from 6 to 8...announcements and such are at 7. If you've never been in the Artisan....well you're in for an experience just walking in the door....
One last thing...we have a HUGE First Friday coming up in the Arts District and rumor has it Marion and even Larry himself may make an appearance. And there's also the spaghetti dinner on Friday night that they have once a month or so this month's is on the this Friday coming up. I haven't been to one yet but the reputation it has is great.
If you make it out to any of the meetings / get togethers you'll find a pretty friendly group. I highly suggest you look up Quirk...he's documenting the Lucky Lady Lucy project and he's a great person to meet. Also Doug and Nikki (hope I got the spelling right) are two totally awesome people who are some of the organizers behind the LV group. Again, fantastic people to know.
By the way I just moved here 2 days after Christmas and have learned a lot...if I can be of any help on anything to do with Vegas let me know. I've picked up a lot of good contacts, resources and such that might be helpful. I can't help with the rideshare but...maybe others can. But anything else...ask!
Oh and one last thing...if you come down to the arts district for First Friday (I-15 & Charleston then take Charleston East under the Union Pacific railroad tracks) beware of where you park. Some lot owners are scum, and some tow company got $30,000 last First Friday by towing 300 cars. It was all over the news...so just look around before parking to make sure the lot isn't signed and be prepared to walk a bit.

Kinetic: Thanks for all of the extremely helpful guidance as well as the gratitude regarding Vegas in general. Being here for about 5 months now, I haven't come across many genuinely good people and I feel I have found finally found my people. I hope to get to know some good people here in Vegas before heading out there by my lonesome

I read that and I'm like yep, I feel the same way. Vegas has an abundance of rude people and stupid unsafe drivers. (If you haven't seen the 3 lane right turn from the far left lane thing yet you will soon enough. Oh and you learn the LA hesitation at green lights in certain parts of the city.) No I felt kind of out of sync as this place is just...well different. Definitely not Denver, and a far cry from Nebraska or Kansas City. But once I met the BM group and found out about First Friday and got connected there things have been better.HenryHayflick wrote:Kinetic: Thanks for all of the extremely helpful guidance as well as the gratitude regarding Vegas in general. One last bit of soapbox talk....consider the Strip it's own world. The people there are not really Las Vegas. On the strip it's about hitting up the 38.5 Million people who fly into McCarran for the BILLIONS needed to sustain itself. Away from the strip I've met some great people here. I hope you can have the same experience I have because at first I was like I don't think I want to live here. Now that I know people I've left and found myself thinking I can't wait to go home and I don't want to live anywhere else!
Again I hope you can make it out to First Friday and can get involved in stuff. If I can be of any help in any way please don't hesitate to ask!

I can't get over the hospitality and great things happening here. I was starting to think I wouldn't find any like-minded people in Vegas; now I have. Thanks to suggestions, I'll be heading to the Vegas regional build tomorrow!

Hey there Henry,
Welcome to eplaya and Las Vegas. As Kinetic V said there is alot of great Burner action here. And right now with our CORE project underway we are knee deep in community and a growing interest in what we Burning Man is all about on the playa and off.
I hope you do make it out to the build tomorrow. I plan on starting at 4:30pm and there is plenty to do.
See ya there
Doug
