Military Surplus / supplies

Post by langdon » Sat May 28, 2011 1:36 pm

Anybody use military surplus for camping?

Was thinking about picking up an army cot or two and some other gear from a surplus store or yard sale - suggestions or money better spent elsewhere? Thanks

Absolutely; military surplus is great. I have used them in the past for playa day-bags, utility belts, bandannas, stainless canteens, desert goggles* . . . the list goes on; but those are favorites. I never leave for the playa without a visit or three. Sometimes you can still find shade netting, though this is apparently getting more rare because people were using them to shield grow operations from aerial view(?)

*Certain military goggles are meant to actually keep dust out, rather than just look cute and cyb3r. The clear ones are good for night. I do have dark green tinted goggles (from a welding company) for day, though.

REI has the edge for cots, however, in terms of comfort, if you like a bit of cushioning. They have a folding cot with a thin little mattress that I very much love.

Shemaghs are plentiful there in a variety of colors. Our surplus store has the real McCoy U.S. Military goggles for $$$ or the foreign-made knock-offs for $$,,,, tinted, clear and interchangeable lenses available.

Parachute cord, tools and even gas/dust masks are there just waiting for you!

Just don't bother with Helmets. My German M-40 got hotter than hell on the playa.

Cots are great, and surplus tent stakes are the best, if you can find them.

Shade netting isn't used quite as much for outdoor growers anymore, especially people using supplemental lighting on their operations. It doesn't really protect much, as police now look for large patches of uniform or camo coloring and have IR cameras to pick up any supplemental lights being used outside, which is how you would have to be growing your plants to get the DEA or local task force after you in the first place...

ANYWAY, shade netting shouldn't be too hard to find if you wanted to get some. :P

I found heavy duty UV treated camo tarps at my local surplus store for a good price, had to get a couple. Also picked up a 200oz canteen, some flares, and propane canisters for a good price.

You could get a good amount of necessities from one stop at a good surplus store.

I rock a lot of milsurp for my gear, especially in the carrying it around end of things. Suspenders and a pistol belt make up for a lack of pockets really easily, and I can haul a full survival kit without the weight bugging me the way it does on just shoulder straps.

I'm dying to buy a M918 and all sorts of other stuff from DRMO through Government Liquidators. Regretfully Oregon is the middle of nowhere for on base surpluss. :?

Last year, when we discovered some of our specialized custom rebar stakes had been stolen, MyLarry substituted those type of military stakes on our carport on four legs, they held just fine (two per leg).
