looking for music activated 12 volt switch

Post by xhoosier » Mon Jun 06, 2011 8:23 am

I remember seeing things like this as a kid but for some reason I can not find a simple pre-made switch activated by music.

i want to switch off and on a bunch of LED's using a switch that is 12 volt. Does anyone know where to find some cheap switches like this? I see some thing similar on the internet but they are 9 volt kits or built into something allready. I need 3 to 4 so cheap is a must.

thanks in advance

What is "cheap"? You could build audio-triggered switches yourself using electrical components which would probably cost less than buying them. Probably on the order of a buck or two each. If you need help with the circuit, send me a PM.

i was thinking 10 to 15 bucks. I just didn;t want to have to build them but I can if it is simple. I was thinking that maybe have the ability to string 10 to 15 12 volt LED's ( I have them) together.

thanks,
mark

Google for 12V color organ or 12V light organ or color organ dc single channel.
Here's an example:

Image
http://www.apogeekits.com/light_organ_mk114.htm

A single channel, 50 watt kit, $12.50.
It will provide about 4 amps of output current that will drive around 200 LED's.
It's a basic kit that, even if you aren't an electrogeek, you can build. Just look up 'how to solder':
http://www.google.com/search?num=30&hl= ... how+to+sol

Here's another very cool kit:
http://www.xkitz.com/catalog/light-orga ... 113d86242f
Its a five channel kit. You can run 2 amps worth of LED'd from each input. That's about 100 LED's @ 20mA each!
This is an advanced kit and is $64.

There are fully assebled units out there but cost a lot more.
You may be able to find a friend or neighbor who can help you or assemble it for you. Sweeten the deal with a burger or a beer.

That light organ is a nice kit, especially since the light intensity responds to the audio, rather than just being something like a relay. Plus it's all through-hole soldering, which is usually pretty easy.

Do you need a color organ or switch?

Not sure

I am more sure what the difference is. But I want something that turns led s off and on based on the beat of the music

That is essentially a color organ.

They typically have different frequency filters for at least three ranges.

The old designs were made for incandescent bulbs.
LEDs have a much more abrupt cutoff voltage.

Any audio switch could be used for bass notes though, with a filter.

I notice many devices for dogs barking.
There used to be alarms like this too.
