Has anyone got the Paypal and orginization skills to do this thing?

The car may be out of hock, but there's more to consider.... not the least of which being the probable need of antibiotics and the most definite need of a positively charged roof. (even a youth hostel sounds like a better deal at this point)

I can't do much from here without Paypal. Canadian funds and a postal strike (the unofficial effects being worse than the official) make that impossible.

But one needs someplace to SEND the money, now doesn't one.

Ive checked, and just the Bank fees for an account-to-account transfer come to about as much as I could afford to actually send, making that just plain stupid too.

Yes, the important thing is to avoid insane fees.

If there is an account with banking in most places, it is simple.

Ridiculously, when I was in california I couldn't access my own money.
They claim they can only do deposits in person, more patriot act bullshit.

Some credit cards can do bank deposits without a fee.
My bank takes credit cards without a fee.
Walmart is supposed to be offering some sort of service now, but I don't know details.

There are two basic approaches, to get funds direct to someone, or to pay specific bills.

Some churches can help in these cases.

All you're trying to do is get funds from one place to another securely.
I'm sure some on here know many approaches.

But you have to send the money TO someone. I can't just type in Send it to MaryAnimal of Eplaya. It's just not that smart.

Bank fees are $32 plus international currency transfer, and a $5 "you did business with an actual person and/or did something out of the ordinary" fee .

It's not a bank. Its a type of banking co-op that has monopoly in this province, and the fees are outrageous for even the normal stuff.

There are ways to get around banks now, though I'm not up to speed.

Walmart charges $5 here for a transfer.
Might be higher there + currency charge.
Worldwide store to store.

There's always checks and money orders too, as an option.

I have to sympathize with towing bullshit.
I still haven't recovered from the last towing I had to pay.
$1000, after they lowered it.
What a racket.

That appears to pertain more to businesses.

I THINK, given the little I know about Paypal, that MA would have to:

a) have a Paypal account that is
b) linked to her bank account so she could access it as real money

...otherwise it's just "internet" money, which is all good and fine, but is rather limited for her immediate needs.

"a)" takes about 6 seconds to do
"b)" can take a week or more as Paypal bounces off your Bank to verify everything is all good and fine.

Money could still be sent to the account while the bank process is doing its thing, but access to real dollars would only be possible once the process is thru.

(I think. My Paypal history has been limited solely to internet transactions, so I'm a bit unclear on the Actual Money part)

That might be the best way.... for MA to open her own account.

Especially since it would not be linked to any kind of physical address. Given the current living situation, that just seems like the easiest and safest route.

I think here would be the perfect place and time to relate a little personal story that happened here the day-before-yesterday:

My son asked me how one would go about donating a "large chunk of money".

This surprised me, since he hasn't got a job currently, and as far as I know only has about $5 left from his last day of work a couple of weekends ago.

Turns out, he had the great idea of starting a fundraiser at the Youth Centre.... Probably for Ronald McDonald House (probably because he knows I slept on a bench the last time he was hospitalized)....

As he put it: "If I can get 100 people to give just ONE dollar each, we'd have 100 bucks. That's better than none!"

This is what I'd like to see here. Lets show this kid that this type of thinking is contageous!!!! THIS is what we ALL need, imho!!!!

My pay pal is set up so that I can get up to $400 in cash each month. I don't know what the Canada thing does to it, but I've never had a problem buying stuff from Canada on ebay. Mine is a personal, not a business thing.

Tho truthfully, I don't think it's a bad thing to get this ball rolling in a bit of a more public manner in the interest of gathering some more moss (or other such green stuff.....) (good lord, how many mixed metaphors was that anyhow????)

Edited to add: And we have had some trouble in the past with US banks agreeing to cash our cheques without fees. Most banks don't even flinch. I write "USD" after the amount and all is good.... but some (and I don't have a list of which) have given the holders the runaround on them.

this is the most amazing thing, seeing people who just want to help.
it seems to me the quickest way would be western union, assumoing MA has a passport, we (i include me as this a way better use of money than gambling) just transfer it to the town she's in with passport or a password so MA can get cash instantly.
small amounts are reasonably cheap too.

b) She would have to physically go to the pickup spot every time something came in.... individually.

And, if she suddenly had to relocate, the monies would be harder to access.
