I need a camp
Hai guys, I hope to connect with some folks from CoLab in July but as of now I have no camp, first time burner...
I am starting to get scared actually. I don't want to camp by myself. Have heard bad stories. I am a single girl from Alabama going by myself.
Any advice? Any of you guys from Co Lab? I will be in ATL this weekend.
I really like the people I have met from ATL but don't know too many who will be attending.

It starts where you are.
Re: I need a camp
You should get some new stories. And if you want to talk to Colab people, try signing up for the Burn ATL yahoo group, the atlantatoburningman google group, be Colab's Facebook friend/join the group so you know when Friday night cook-outs are. None of the current Colab residents post on Eplaya.everythingis0dd wrote:Hai guys, I hope to connect with some folks from CoLab in July but as of now I have no camp, first time burner...

Welcome to ePlaya!
I'd reread everything C.f.M. said- cause she hit the nail on the head!
Do you got your ticket yet?
Then I'd reread the Survival guide.
And maybe try hitting up some of the other virgin lone wolf burners and see if ya'll start a mini lone wolf camp!

Why don't ya stick your head in that hole and find out? ~piehole

Welcome! Yes, definitely read the survival guide and make sure you have all the supplies/equipment you need out there. If you have that, then camping solo is no problem.
You might want to check out orphan camp (see link below). We bring all our own stuff but have some nice community resources (big shade structure) and form a little village around it.

Thank you both. A virgin lone-wolfer camp- That might be a possibility, although a far-flung one.
I have tickets and it looks like I have a ride out, I'm just antsy without a camp.
Ya'll will like me! I swear I'll come up with better stories, although I tend to be somewhere between an idealist and a harsh realist. Like one year I really wanted my entire life to be about saving tigers from extinction. I was 17- I should have gone for that but anyways...
I apparently can't just go out into the desert without anyone else that I know. ::Violen:: Being a cute single girl is hard enough ::end violen::
I do it all the time in Birmingham, freakin' go out at stupid stupid times of the night. But I walk fast and have had good luck with not getting hurt. I've seen some shit though, Birmingham is a lot more dangerous than burning man.
I still don't want to camp by myself though, so thanks for the advice.

Ah, but it's extra exciting, cause it lets the lazy psycho get her off the net.Ugly Dougly wrote:So instead of going alone and meeting strangers on the playa, you're willing to hook up with a stranger on-line? I don't see how that's much different. :)
At any rate, here is some portion of the distill wisdom on the topic of camp-finding.

Hi Everythingis0dd.
I hope you consider camping with Orphan camp. Invitations from a camp don't happen every day.
Camp representatives don't (usually) visit virgin threads; they wait for virgins to come to them & extoll their finest qualities.
The survival guide is here (it's 2010, but 2011 probably wont have huge changes) . . .

Oh, well that's fantastic. Camping with a long-time burner you like is just as good (if not better) than camping with a low-drama group, depending on your personality. I'm actually a big advocate of duos & trios with whom one has a calm & friendly history.I'm honored! I just don't know what's going on for real because I've already hooked up with a friend of my cousins who is a long-time burner!
It's all a lot to think about. I'm pretty freakin pumped.
I'm just saying that if you want a group, you would want to act reasonably quickly because a lot of camps close their doors in June (or earlier).

You're beyond lazy. You just lay there and wait for them to jump into the boat. You've made laziness an art form. I hear you got a grant this year.Ugly Dougly wrote:Me? A lazy psycho?theCryptofishist wrote:... lazy psycho...
Well, yes, Fishy, I am flattered. :)

Not necessarily, in the real world if you make a street crossing in great haste the car may be far enough back to not hit you. While at burning man, that same car may have a flame thrower in range to warm you up.everythingis0dd wrote:Birmingham is a lot more dangerous than burning man.
In the real world you might perceive a group of people on the street to be dangerous. When in fact they are just chilling. While at burning man, you might perceive a group of people to be friendly. When in fact they are tweaking out, and can be violent.
It's not that these places are inherently dangerous, just different sets of rules. If you can make rational decisions, then you'll be fine. :)

I don't know, I read these "I need a camp" posts and wonder if there is just a trend towards fear and a lack of self sufficiency.
Grownups go out in the world and take care of themselves. Try it, you'll feel pretty good about it. If you are willing to make the trip by yourself, you've got the nerve you need. Your neighbors will look out for you, it's something people used to do more perhaps, but it's very compelling to help out there.
If you have bad neighbors, find some others. Maybe you'll find a neighborhood to aim for on this board.
This will be my fifth year solo. I like it. I'm not saying I wasn't anxious about going by myself my first year. But I figured it was like going camping by myself, which I like, and sure 'nuff it was.

I've decided not to dwell on any trend towards a lack of self-sufficiency (as I've been on ePlaya just under 3 years) but I'll wager that a lot of what we're seeing is an enduring rumor that "you have to have a camp", which is passed on like a campfire ghost story by people who've never been.
I'm guessing half the folks seeking camps as if their life depends on it won't ultimately go anyway, because it's just too overwhelming. The other half go, and realize they're either much more capable than they imagined, or develop a new understanding of their limitations. Or both.
