First timers from UK going from San Francisco
Hey,
We're a couple coming from England to San Francisco about a week before BM, which we've got tickets for. Originally we had a group of us going and one could drive so we were going to hire a car out there but as always with these things people drop out due to money.
So with two of us left we're hoping to stay cheaply in San Francisco for about a week beforehand and then carpool over from there. Still yet to find someone to car share with though.
We're also planning to buy our camping stuff out in the states so that we don't take a huge amount over on the plane. Anyone got any recommendations on places in San Fran to stay, buy, see etc? Oh and if you have two carpool spaces left let me know ;)
Thanks guys. (Hope that counts as an introduction)

I am also a birgin.
Have a look at the San Fran local burners page - you can access that through the links on the BM website. The people on that should be able to help you. There will also be rideshare info on the eplaya and probably through the San Fran local burner page.
Good luck and see you in the dust

dembskibowden, the http://rideshare.burningman.com link will update to 2011 soon, and when it does, sign up! Good luck with it.
The two cheapest places to get camping equipment in San Francisco would be WalMart and Target. More expensive, but devoted to camping: the REI store. You can google map them all.
It helps that you'll be coming in a week early; you can beat some of the international rush. That's how I'd want to do it--San Francisco is a great city, so it's nice you'll have some time to see it. Buy all your stuff first, then spend a few days eating.
And walk on the Golden Gate bridge if you can; it's quite beautiful.
Btw: The Green Tortoise hostel does Burning Man trips, and is of course a place to sleep, but their trips are just 5 days long and I don't know if they have space left.

Hiya there! I too am coming from the UK and will be flying into San Fran on the Wednesday before I think. I am renting a 4x4 and driving over to BM later. And I too will be buying stuff in the Bay Area to keep the baggage down. And yes, I have space in my 4x4! And I'm a virgin burner. I also have lived in San Fran for 3 years so know my way around.
Let me know if you are interested in hooking up.

WOW. Sounds completely like me and my GF. We're in London (saving money) and we'll have 2.5-3 weeks to hang around and see stuff.
I double checked nad triple checked and cross checked ticket prices: We are going to spend couple of days in NYC and then head West.
Either way: see you there! :)

Hey!
We were in your exact position two years ago. Happy to say we are going back this year....
So we stayed here http://www.sanremohotel.com/
Its like an old stage post or something. Its a cute place, prety ancient, nice vibe, nothing at all fancy, but definitely friendly. Plus it was like $60 a night for two people so its a pretty good deal....
Hope this helps.

At the age of 37 she realised she'd found forever, as she roared along through Paris with the warm wind in her hair.

Yo all you Londoners! Graidawg is coordinating a get-together on Wednesday, June 22nd with ME! as the honoured guest. Having been to the previous 12 Burning Mans, and hosting a modest but fun theme camp (perhaps you've heard of us: Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro www.barbiedeathcamp.com), I would be happy to instill whatever questionable information I can inflict upon you to help your playa adventure be the best that it can be. All I ask is that you chip in for a pint. Or two. PM me or Graidawg and let's have a party! (We're looking at around 4 p.m. until maybe 10 p.m. because I have other "problems", but you're welcome to Party On Dude!)
