According to "The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich", the Nazi Party pre-dated Hitler. Hitler, who was working for the military at the time, was infiltrating various organizations to see if they posed a threat to the government. The National Socialists just happened to be happy to have anyone apparently taking them serioursly, and invited Hitler to attend a second meeting, and Hitler realized that, since he had his own political ambitions, he could save himself considerable effort by taking over an existing group. He really didn't care what the group's name was, or even its original professed values were (originally, the National Socialists really were a variety of socialist). After Hitler took over the party, he simply changed things to fit his goals and ideals.
