Ride desk share sounds promising...
Do you have details on how that ride share desk works exactly? Never had to figure out a ride share like this before- and not familiar with how a ride share desk would work for something like this.
Unfortunately with job change this year I can't get the whole week off so I will be arriving at Reno airport around 11pm Tuesday night. It will just be me and my camelbak. Already set on my transports after the Burn, but need to figure out this hole in my plans of Reno to BRC.

FWIW, one year we exited and had to drop by the Grand Sierra. I saw a couple that had a BRC Going Home sign, probably on a 2' X 3' piece of construction paper. We pulled over and immediately gave them a ride. They said they had been out there "about 20 seconds" when the first offer came in. They couldn't take all the stuff these guys had packed, including water. In our RV, no problem. They said we came by about a minute later.
The moral of the story: Have a sign, make your intentions clear, and have all your equipment together, and getting a ride to Black Rock City from anywhere in central Reno (they took the free shuttle from the airport to the casino) will be the easiest hitch hike imaginable.

Finding a ride at the airport to get there generally works out okay. Finding yourself a round trip though could be a tricky proposition (read: make friends on the Playa who are leaving when you are).
Also, don't be a dumbass like me. When you arrange a ride, MAKE SURE THEY HAVE A TICKET TOO AND ARE GOING THROUGH THE GATES. You don't wanna be at the ticket office at 1am wondering how the fuck you're gonna get you and all the shit you're lugging from there to the camps, believe me.
Oh, and speaking of "all that shit you're lugging", when asking for rides it's good to give a quick rundown of your gear, since that may determine whether or not someone actually has room for you. That includes any gear you need to pick up once you're in Nevada.

Rides from Reno
As it gets closer there is a ride desk at Reno and 2 other places (grocery store-type places where a lot of burners stop to load up goods).
I hitched a ride from the airport last year. It was easy and fun. A volunteer will be at a desk at the end of the terminal before you turn right to baggage claim, they give you a sign that says, "I NEED A RIDE TO BURNING MAN." Then you start to meet people...
Last year I got in on Thursday, 4 or 5 people in front of me got rides right away... I got one about an hour later. Met loads of people that "wished they had room" and "wished me luck." It was fun to run into them on the playa later! I think it is easier Mon & Tues, when more people are coming through... but there were enough burners that we chatted, shared ideas/resources/stories... it was a great introduction to Playa Life.

Do they also give you a sign "ride to share"
I will come in on Sat night and pick up a rental car the next day.
Then I will drive back to the airport on Monday and see if
anyone needs a ride.
Thx for the info. It sounds easier then the Ride share board.

this is pretty much exactly what I needed to hear, as long as someone is willing to put up with me on the ride there and back, I'm good (and as long as I can get to reno cheaply)
Is there anything like this for Las Vegas? (just wondering, then I can fit two trips into one, mwahahaha)

I awake to a world I do not recognize and yet, recognizing the world is a sensation that I haven't experienced in ages. Good morning world, I've been asleep for a long time.
I need a ride from Reno To Burning Man.
Hi,
I need to leave by or about August 29th. I really will not have much gear, maybe a backpack. I can leave anytime and will of course help with gas.
Let me know if anyone interested.

Thanks again everyone for the info. Now that my flight is booked I'll repost my confirmed info.
Need: A ride to BRC from Reno Airport. (I do not need a ride back. Just one-way for me).
I arrive to Reno Airport Tuesday August 30th at 6:45pm.
Room requirements: Just me and a backpack that can sit on my lap (very light travel and Ticket is already handled so I'll be good to enter the gates).
I will gladly help contribute towards gas and a quick bite before the road to home (BRC).

I worked as a volunteer last year at the airport, so the rideshare there works this way:
WHERE IS THE DESK?
Flights arrive on the second floor. Head down to the first floor and turn right to where the luggage carousels are located. The AirPlaya desks are located just before the carousels and are staffed by local Reno residents and volunteers who can help with just about any FAQ.
HOW DOES THE RIDESHARE BOARD WORK?
If you need a ride, write down when you want to leave and your contact info (a cell phone really helps). As people stop by to check in, they will look at the rideshare boards and if your timing works with theirs and they have room, they will contact you and set up a pick-up time and place.
Sometimes people just sat near the desks and held up a sign that said "NEED A RIDE TO THE PLAYA" so people could see this as they walked up.
It was amazing to see how well this simple system worked.
BUT.
I would suggest trying to work this out before arriving at the airport.
I was shocked how many people came up and said to us, "What time is the shuttle bus and how much is it?" Some people arrived with no tent or sleeping bag, not knowing they needed one. Some people didn't know they had to bring their own food or water. Lots of people were supposed to meet up with others, but had no idea what the other person looked like or didn't have their contact info. Several people realized they had left their Burning Man tickets at home. Others didn't have a place to stay that night, so we volunteers were scrambling to hook people up with hotel room shares. It was crazy!

Hi all, first time international burner here.
I'm flying into Reno 31st Aug or 1st Sep and can't make it earlier due to some work commitments. Is it likely anyone will be traveling/offering lifts this late in the event?
I'm also camping with friends who will be there at the event open, is possible for them to exit BM and drive to Reno to get me?
Thanks!

People are still entering the event on the 31st and 1st, though of course it's unpredictable. The http://rideshare.burningman.com board will be updated to 2011 soon and maybe you could find someone entering when you are
It looks like a friend could come get you. 1st, 2nd and 6th(!) paragraphs in the link below address leaving & returning by car. The Gerlach shuttle/car stuff is sort of mixed together. Looks like your friend would have to go to the Bus Depot in Center Camp before going to the outer Gate. Apparently, there's $20 per person AND a bus ticket AND a chit AND a Burning Man ticket stub involved. Boy, are they serious. (It's to prevent unnecessary traffic in-&-out, dustier roads, & perhaps stowaways.)

Cell service on the playa is spotty/non-existent, so if you decided to have friends come get you, pick the most reliable one (hopefully it's the one who also loves you the most) and plan it in advance as much as you can.

Basically your friends CAN come get you. They will need to pay a $20 fee per person that exits the event. The exit lane will collect the money, ask if you have your ticket stubs (all the people in the car need them) and wristband each participant leaving.
Upon re-arrival, each in the car shows their wristband AND ticket stub & your picked up person gives their normal ticket. All other Gate operations are the same...still searched, etc.

Yaaaaay . . . real, tested knowledge!
(I wish that page separated bus exits and car exits). So Lord of Ruin, is there anything you would add for an early entry person who is there for the . . . bracketing weekends, but is compelled to work most of the weekdays in between? i.e. he'd leave when Gates open and return to the event Friday night before the burn, even as late as Saturday morning of. Do you know if there's a cut-off for re-entry or other specific difficulty?
It's, uh, for a friend.

Try:

And read Moonsplash's post above in this thread, from June 15th. If scheduling a share doesn't work out ahead of time, there is also a rideshare desk in the Reno airport that will match you with arrivals who have vehicles. Be ready to offer a little gas money to whomever.

Not really. Vegas is FAR from the playa. About 7 hour drive to Reno. About a 12 hour drive to the playa - depending on when you arrive and how bad the line is. There are lots of people driving from Vegas, though - so you might be able to find a ride.
I've had a couple of friends try to burn and then go to Vegas to party afterward. They were all too exhausted from the burn to enjoy Vegas. Plus, after the burn, Vegas feels very fake and plastic - (talk about a culture-clash!). You probably wont be in the mood for the Vegas vibe after your mind has been adjusted on the playa.
Re: Looking for a ride from Reno!!
Indeed, I can't imagine enjoying Vegas after the playa . . . culturally speaking. Vegas has its own weird appeal, but not when directly juxtaposed to a place like Burning Man.
Admittedly, I would enjoy Vegas's showers, buffets, & hotel beds, but . . . I post-playa I have revelled just as much in a $40/night motel and Burger King.
