desert clothing
As I prepare for my first burn, I've been thinking about what to wear just for defense against the elements. It occurred to me that people in the middle east have been dealing with harsh desert climates for hundreds of years, so I looked for the long white outfits that everyone seemed to be wearing the one time I went through the airport at Dubai. I just got mine in the mail today, it does seem like it will be really comfortable. I also like the idea of taking on the clothing of a people who are experiencing a huge prejudice in America these days (yes I know there are islamic people who hate us. There are also islamic people who don't).

An old, but interesting article. I have no idea if it's true or not:

Flowing robes.
It makes sense to me.
I went first to the Beduin style, with blood red on the outside. That was ok for most temps at BRC. Then I hit upon Americana/1850's, and that TOTALLY works for me.
I wear a FULL prairie skirt -- about 10 yards of unbleached muslin, (with eyelet trim). I work all day, moving fast, so I needed something that was as well "desert tested" wear. All that fabric serves as a shelter structure for the lower half of my body, and it has air conditioning Beyond that, I have one yard of unbleached muslin that I drape over my head/shoulders when it gets ridiculous hot. That works fabulously. Tens of thousands of women crossing the Great Plains can't be ALL wrong. Turns out they had a damn good thing going.
Bottom line: personal experience sez that a lot of fabric works well as insulation. I can therefore surmise that if the subjective temp difference when in many yards of black lightweight fabric, it would be even more comfortable.
Nice URL you pulled up. Thanks.
