Using Burning Man name for commercial gain? toughmudder.com
A friend of mine sent me a link to a website of a marathon-event type of organization. http://toughmudder.com/ They advertise their events as "a cross between ironman and Burning Man." I can see no similarities to Burning Man other than that there might be fire at some of their events.
I sent an email to them asking why they are doing this and whether they've ever been to the playa, or if they know what Burning Man is about, and got no response.
What do you think of this??
Or, let them know what you think of this: [email protected]

Maybe its because you get to climb on stuff?
I bet you get drunk when it is over?
The next event is here in CO. Should I go ask them?

You can alert the lawyers if you want (AntiM knows how, I believe) but I don't think that's something they can control. I don't understand all the legal crap, however. And, well, as the event establishes itself in the pop-cultural consciousness, you'll see more and more of this.

Jeez...relax. They're not leveraging BM at all, there's simply using it as a pop culture reference to mean "you get to dress all crazy and shit if you want to."essjay wrote:A friend of mine sent me a link to a website of a marathon-event type of organization. http://toughmudder.com/ They advertise their events as "a cross between ironman and Burning Man." Trust me...the Tough Mudder has no interest in any of BM's cache whatsoever.

My guess is they don't even know what Burning Man is and think its something like Iron Man, and like a few people have said already, I don't think they are using it to try and make more money, just to draw attention. Not saying its right to use another organisations reputation to draw attention, but that's not really the point.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Here it is (typos and alll):
Please explain your Burning Man comparison. I have a feeling that none of you have ever seen Burning Man. Nor should use the name in your advertising.
Thank you,
S

I'm curious why you feel qualified to speak for Burning Man.
Did you email them on a Friday and expect an immediate reply?
Besides, Tough Mudder generates funds for wounded war veterans. Burning Man generates funds for retarded artists. Maybe that's a wash for some people.

Thank you for the website tip. I don't understand your "retarded artist" comment, nor will I further entertain you with any additional responses. Have a nice burn.
