I also added a bobbin tension spring to the bobbin holder to minimize rats nests around the bobbin at high speeds. The spring looks like an insert for 45rpm records

Playing with tension hasn't worked...or different threads and fabrics. Usually I can just tool around and fiddle with the tension and it magically restores itself. I just don't know what else to try. Le sigh. I'm desperately trying to finish some commission projects but really don't want to do ALL the sewing by hand!

I thought about doing a hem with stitch-witchery, but that doesn't always look good with jersey.

I guess I meant he always resets the tension to factory ish specs after he cleans everything :)

C.f.M., I know it's a pain in the ass but, remove the bobbin assembly and clean the fuck out of all the nooks & crannies underneath.

I would also clean all the grooves and loops that the thread goes through, lubricate the machine*, make sure I had the right needle in (medium weight knit?), change bobbins, and try again.

*The manual for my machine has a diagram of all the spots where it needs lube. They sell a special oil for this, but  in a pinch, I have used the point of a straight pin to apply a tiny drop of WD-40 to each little hole.

LOL, well I suspect he will be modeling it quite a bit. He says the flannel lining feels so nice on the skin its a shame to put clothes under it (although I suspect it would be a bit chilly that way at night).

In retrospect I think he was likely less annoyed than he looked and more in still drunk and in deer in the headlights mode.

Anyhow, I like it and it fits, BUT! Powder Pink is NOT my color, nuff said.

I bought the hat thinking I'd come to eplaya costume thread and ask;
CAN THIS WOOL HAT & IT'S MATCHING HAT BAND BE DYED ANY HUE OF RED??!?? It says 100% wool, but perhaps with a mister bottle of 'wine red', low cost :) Rit dye; I could spray it with several light coats of the dye and achieve a nice hue of red. Anyone have any better dyeing ideas?
[snark door is now also wiiiiide open--plz, go easy] I'm all ears, thanks!

Update on the hat, it came out great, ribbon band too! I used Blood Red Rit Dye and soaked it really good.
Sorry, no photos (dead camera batteries) I wanted to let the C&C'rs know how it worked out great before the eplaya upgrades (wondering if I'll be swept away, I suck at computers and well...) Buh Bye-yah eplaya, :( hopefully not, buuuut, ya never know.

I'll try to post a photo Minxy, it did come out really good...including shrinking it just enough to stay on in the winds/breezes on playa.

side note; Is the upgrade truly just a lark? haha, a grand practical joke, too funny! I thought I'd lose all my saved PM's and such. Phew.

I'd LOVE to see it! I'm going to try to post some photos of works in progress today if the boards are up.

Oh and this is what was in the last JRS about the board downtime. :)

EPLAYA MAINTENANCE DOWNTIME POSTPONED

So, we were planning on taking down our beloved (but gasping) ePlaya BBS (http://eplaya.burningman.org) for upgrade/maintenance on June 20, some delays in the preparations for this have forced us to reschedule. We've targeted the new downtime as June 27th, "come hell or high water."

Should the hell or high water in fact overwhelm us, we'll let you know. Our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused....but we look forward to a great new ePlaya!

None of the usual solutions (adjusting tension, fiddling with the bobbin, different thread, different size needle) are working and it's making me nuts.
I've had that happen - and the thing that usually helped the best was just re-threading the whole machine (especially the top, but I take the bobbin out and re-do that one just incase) Other things to try is a different kind of scrap fabric. Like if you are using a knit, try a cotton that doesn't give - if your sewing machine does great on the cotton, then you know you are having tension issues - if it does crappy on the cotton piece as well, then most likely the machine isn't threaded correctly.

My singer was doing that b/c I couldn't see behind the tension dial with all the flat metal rings next to each other very well... so I watched really close one day and saw that the thread was not "clicking" into the right place and it was because I needed to hold the thread more taught as I pulled it through the tension part. Hope that made sense and hope you are already got if all fixed up.
Smile, who cares if you don't have all your teeth.

Re: Foxy Costume Opinions?

Post by Foxfur » Tue Jun 28, 2011 2:14 pm

I've been looking at foxy costumes. If my name is Fox then I should look like one :) It's difficult to find one that really looks good. Most of them look like a mascot from a theme park. Great big hot and heavy heads, suffocating suit, blek!
Once again the ladies have the best toys. Here's a couple of my finalists. I can't decide which one to get, if any. I'd really like to make my own but I haven't sewed for years. (I could knit one...) Anyway, here they are.

Image
I like this one. It's less than $50. I'd need to scrounge up some boots tho...

Image
This one is HOT! The hood is a bit big but that's whay scissors and a stapler are for  The deal breaker is the price, a bit over $300.
I can dream...

Image
I'm not big on the rave theme but LOOK AT THAT ASS!
That's what I'm talkin about, mrreow!

One more. Me and Sweetpea playing rough at the paintball palace...

Any thoughts, preferences, complaints?
Complaints: I clicked on this at work. NB: Clicking repeatedly on the pee jug thread several weeks ago probably didn't speak well for me either.

I am hesitant to make a recommendation because it's all theoretical at this point and it's sort of a personal choice--and you seem somewhat facetious and not actually close to a choice, yet--but if you get a fox tail, or ears, make sure that in particular the tail is to scale. Ears tend to translate from head to head, but a hood or tail should match a person's size, in my opinion. A tall person should have a large tail that looks like it was made for them. I think it was my Grandma who told me that. (Grandma was crazy.)

Oh no no, I'd really like to get one but I already have so much on my plate. My thinking now is that I should wait until next year, unless I find something cool at a thrift shop. For this year I really do want to get a tail though and your (and grandma's) advice is good stuff.
Hey, sorry about the work thing!
I forget that people have to do that and that it could cause some problems, doh.

Well, I cleaned it again and went through the motions and magically it worked. So I am mailing off a package to Trishnek today and starting on something for Lazerfox tomorrow. Me, I'm not going to make any costumes this year. I have to fly again, and it's just too much trouble. Plus, the dust and lack of showers and blah blah blah, and I just might be in all black, all the time, like IRL. I might bring the Sad Rainbow I invented for Euphoria. ImageI just don't want to ruin the hair...and the pasties have sequins so I'd be a total hypocrite. And the damn crinoline takes up as much room as my carry-on of clothes and toiletries!
