Massachusetts was still the first state to pass the gay marriage bill. We were also the only state NOT to vote for Nixon on his second term. People forget stuff like that!

Yay New York (my birth state)! Expect that all the usual CA prop8 slimedogs will now be heading your way to try and undue this progress. Here's hoping California soon emerges from the legal proceedings to represent the US west coast as a marriage for all couples state.

*deep sigh of relief*

It's nice to see that hate and ignorance being rolled back, it's going too slow, but it's going.

I've been to a few same sex weddings already. The one with two brides was a tad awkward when both came down the isle with red dresses on. Ya think they could have talked about this beforehand.

I think what he means is that it's like two friends arriving to the same event with the same dress. A Fashion faux pas. Do you remember the I Love Lucy show when Lucy and Ethel were on Ricky's variety show wearing the same dress for a musical number?

This is the closest I could get~

Just to clarify, the hate money came mostly from that big ol' church in Utah. Here's hoping more rational heads prevail in CA soon.

Ya, but they were lesbians...the have no style sense. I give them credit, at least they were wearing dresses!
(before I piss somebody off, let me just clarify that i was saying, that for the most part, they have a different style sensibility.)

The State Senator here in MA that pushed for the same sex marriage bill is a friend of mine. When the historic vote was taken many years back, I watch the debate on TV. There was no sound on this, but the live broadcast was shown on all channels here. I could see the silent argument for maybe a half hour before the vote was taken. I'm not sure why no sound was allowed for this presentation.
After the vote was taken, it of course passed and history was made. The next morning I got a call from my Senator buddy who said to me, "I think I fucked up and committed political suicide". He was unsure how his constituents would react. I assured him that this was how the civil rights movement started and that he would go down in history for this.
I ended my call with my usual caustic sarcasm by telling him that everyone had the right to be equally miserable.

+1000 - we live in amazing times, a black man as President, democracy spreading in the mid-East, and the momentum towards all being treated as equal (yes, I know we have a VERY long way to go). It makes my cynical heart think there may be some hope after all.

Fortunately, New York State has a world-renowned dysfunctional legislature. All kinds of laws are tabled forever.

LOL yes, there are a few of you out there...very few from my experience. Or maybe it's just that Dykes on Bikes always first comes to mind when I think of lesbians and style. Though obviously, they think their "styling"; and there's nothing wrong with that.

Why is doing the right thing often enough considered a 'victory?' or a win?

Hind sight will have many of us asking why it didn't happen sooner. Why did Rosa Parks even have to stay in her bus seat in the first place? Why did women have to suffer the indignities of staying at home while their husbands, fathers and brothers stepped out of the house in order to go vote?

I just hope the nightmares of persecution around the world will eventually subside and vanish.

Praise Be.

Om Shanti, Am.

Congratulations NY!!!!

I get frustrated with this baby-steps approach to something that seems so important and obvious.

When I looked into Canada's history on the matter, I was a bit embarassed to find that it took so long, and how hard certain individuals had to fight for that right. (why does the brain erase the bad parts of history like that)

And.... Gulp..... Can't believe I'm saying this..... but +1000 to Laughing Forest. Well said!!!

There's an interesting article in todays NY Times on the backstory, the wheeling and dealing involving some key Reb. supporters, the Gov and legislators went through to finally overtake the RC lobbyists.

Strange bedfellows indeed.

I'm just bummed that I couldn't make it into the city today for the pride parade, I bet it's one helluva celebration.

And in the same time, the French Assemblée Nationale (our Congress) rejected an identical bill proposed by the Socialist Party (it's not socialists like USSR's socialism, they are more like the left guys in the Democrat party). We call our president "the American" because he's obviously obsessed by living the American way, getting his inspiration from US politics, but it seems this time he chose to play it "old France"... This guy will have been a failure from A to Z...

Yay for New York!

Last summer I was running a day camp for preschoolers in a building that was setting up for a wedding reception. When the children saw photos of the happy couple on display they asked me:

"Why are those men kissing?"
"Because they're getting married."
"Why are they getting married?"
"Because they love each other."

I loved that this was the only explanation they needed. I wish for more people in this world to be so accepting.

Having lived in or near New York City all my life, all I can say is that I'm surprised it took this long. Being gay has pretty much always been accepted here in my lifetime. Even in our small town here in the burbs there were quite a few openly gay students at my kid's high school.

It does remind me of something funny that happened last week at work though. For 3 days there was a guy that kept coming and looking in the window several times each day. On Friday I was up front and waved to him so he came in. He was really nervous and reminded me of how we used to be be as teenagers buying condoms in the 70's - when they were kept behind the counter and you had to ask for them.

He started out by saying he was embarrassed to ask, and mentioned the pride event Sunday. At first I thought he was embarrassed to tell me he was gay, but then it became obvious that wasn't it - he was embarrassed to ask if we had any penis molds.

I'm not really sure why, but it was quite endearing to have a 45ish year old man be embarrassed about that. I reassured him that there was nothing to be nervous about - if I could discuss penis molds with grandmothers (surprisingly often), I certainly had no problem discussing them with another man and showed him what we had.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.
