Julplaya Rideshare
I have a seat open in my truck if someone needs a ride out there and back. Heading out of the SF bay area (north bay) either thursday night or friday morning.
PM me. Split gas costs (should be $70)

Well good luck, I dream of going.. I think 4th of julplaya is a very different event then the one in August. Less rules, a little more self reliance, test of abilities to have a blast in an unforgiving environment. Without the expectation of some neighbor who will have what you need. Not to say that ain't great. anyhoo.. again, good luck and please let us know, in hindsite, how it all went. K?

I am sure there are lots of dry playa out there and normally you can see the difference in color and avoid wet areas. Naturally you only have to worry while you are moving and the speed at wiich you move makes a difference.Minxy wrote:We were planning on going but I'm not sure now with the wet playa conditions.
I don't want to have to worry all the time about getting stuck.
So, my thinking is, if you are able to go, this year will be great.

Yes, I know, but I'm leery. I keep hearing how it's wetter than normal and there is rain forecast for Wednesday. I've never been out there except for the burn.wedeliver wrote:I am sure there are lots of dry playa out there and normally you can see the difference in color and avoid wet areas. I'm thinking of going but I have not come up with a #2 excrement solution that would pack on my motorcycle. I also don't know that my back could handle the ride. A 2 hour ride the other day did not end in joy. Damn it would be neat though.

I could think of ways to handle the poo, but driving from Aurora, OR to the playa on a motorcycle? I've done that kind of distance in one day in the past but I am definitely out of condition to attempt it now. I need a mid bike sissy bar for my ailing back...Minxy wrote:I could think of ways to handle the poo, but driving from Aurora, OR to the playa on a motorcycle? Re: Julplaya Rideshare
So, an adventure awaits. Remember to take your tire chains! Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, but I think this weekend will be great, if not absolutle perfect weather on the Playa. Since it is so close I/we just might take a drive and visit for a while. But, either way, have a blast, please take some nice pictures and share with us if you feel so inclined. I really hope YOUR experience is memorable!
I just pictured an ass trying to kill someone the
headline would read "ASS KILLS SELF"!
so I said to myself, "self".
yeah, I edited this post!

Tent, sleeping bag, umm..cooking stove, water, pot, cup, instant coffee, rice a roni, 1 gallon water and stuff like that. Don't take much if you travel light. I might go for one night, drive down in the car with minimal stuff...

Re: Julplaya Rideshare
At least 2 vehicles are at this time heading south on Cal Hwy 139 on their way to the Playa to hang out for a few days... They passed through the Bug Station just a little while ago. I have a feeling this year is going to be PERFECT just north of Gerlach for those who wish to see things like the great american trail and if you like the ISS. good viewing opportunities tonight, tomorrow and the next night

Re: Julplaya Rideshare
Aw, Wedeliver, I hope you go. I'd love to meet you.
We are leaving (from Bay Area) either tomorrow after Will gets off of work or (more likely) very very early Saturday morning so we get to the playa after it's light out.

Re: Re:
If I make the trip I will be definitely stopping bye the Eagles Nest. All above reasons are valid and I agree with them. However I'm 90% going to stay here because I don't want to risk aggravating my back and be unable to perform well at work in the new position I start on Tuesday. I also have my only Niece's birthday party tomorrow and it would be nice to spend time with family that I rarely do. I very much want to go see the playa in it's off season and will one day roll in to the Eagles Nest doing just that.wedeliver wrote: If you go, stop by here.. Re: Julplaya Rideshare
So, here it is 5:00pm on July 4th and I am 165 miles from the playa, oh how I long for your smooth surface, for yourvast expanses, for your gifting us a place to contemplate our navels, or armys, either way, i wish I was there.. I hear people giggling, I wish I was there..I see colors in the sky from the rockets red glare, I wish I was there..
ok, how was it boys and girls? Any pics, since they say 1000 words.

Re: Julplaya Rideshare
It was super nice, Wedeliver.
The playa is in the best condition I've ever seen. Rock hard and solid. There were a few wet patches but easily avoidable.
I didn't take pics but we did have a lovely time. My fiance and I were camped by a dune all by our lonesome and it was beautiful, peaceful and quiet. We could see off at the other dunes the Frogbat camp, Vamp camp and others doing fireworks and spinning fire. I didn't get to see anyone I knew (except Les, story incoming) although I met some nice folks.
And playa magic struck even though it wasn't the burn.
One of our Burning Man camp mates, Les, randomly found us out there on the playa with no previous communication! We hadn't talked to him to let him know we were going or anything, we didn't have our normal Burn RV and he didn't have his modified bus he brings to the Burn...yet he still randomly found us on the giant playa. Trippy! And fun! A mutual friend and Burn campmate had talked to him and told him we "might" be out there but we hadn't spoken to him.
To make it even weirder, he does live in Reno but was just driving back from a cross-country drive. He'd just driven 8500 miles and managed to land on the playa at the same time we did...COOL!
We had brought my minivan as the RV is being fixed and it was really neat to tent camp on the playa again. I've really missed it since Will got the RV.
Oh and we found a lost digital camera. I'm going to have to try to track the owner down if possible.
It was a nice, relaxing weekend.
