Tent pegs?
I am going to be in a small 2 man tent. I keep reading about re-bar 12inch tent pegs. I am coming from England. will i be able to get suitable tent pegs in SF or should i try to sort something out before I leave UK. (I want to be able to pack more than just my tent and heavy duty tent pegs!)

I'd pick them up in the US rather than carry them.

Re: Tent pegs?
Sturdy nine inch tent pegs will work fine for a small tent, eg the aluminium kind that look like an oversized nail with a plastic clip on top.

Re: Tent pegs?
Generally -- get twice as many as you think you need, including some for guying side attachment points on the tent, and some extra cord eg parachute cord. At the main tent corners, you can cross two stakes for extra security. And try to pitch the tent downwind (NE) of vehicles.

Re: Tent pegs?
I'd buy them when you get to the US tbh. They're only like $1 each at any major DIY store (Home Depot, Lowes, etc) and it saves you the trouble of being arrested by the TSA.

Re: Tent pegs?
I second the tent "nails." I've been using them for years for a medium size (11 X 12) tent and they work just fine. Another tip: try to position your tent behind a larger structure like a truck or RV to block the prevailing wind (usually from the southwest)...and at the same time shade it from the morning sun...you ever seen that scene from Lawrence of Arabia when the sun's coming up on the desert? That sun!DullBedsitBloke wrote:Irreverent Moniker wrote:I'd buy them when you get to the US tbh. Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Re: Tent pegs?
FYI, some of the replies above are referring to *steel* timber spikes eg from Home Depot or lumber yards. Aluminium tent pegs are one-third the weight, and if you buy them at home you can avoid panicking when you find that the stores around San Francisco or Reno have run out of stock of such items commonly hoarded by buhrnurz at the last minute before the event.

Re: Tent pegs?
I go to Home Depot and get the 16" Y shaped orange plastic pegs.. light, easy to drive, many angles and surface area for strength and EASY to pull out (unlike rebarr) I used them on all our carports and have never had one pull out (drive in at a slight angle from direction of pull).. they have a wide head for pounding (use a dead drop hammer) and also a hole and hooks on the end... a couple of bucks each..
think big and dare to fail

Another tip, store heavy items in your tent like water jugs etc when your not sleeping in it for extra weight
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.
