I found the announcement about the outage interesting and revealing. Evidently it's not a BRAND SPANKING NEW SERVER. It's just another old left over server they had laying around or decommissioned from a more important mission, with a defective, partially installed version of mySQL server someone left on it, that they decided to use to "upgrade" eplaya. Alas, we are still the unwanted stepchild of the Burning Man IT Department.

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Try going to this URL http://eplaya.burningman.org/index.php and see if that works.

It's a Mickey Mouse type IT shop that uses MySQL. Seriously, it's the crapware that gets shipped with Indian software for those who are too cheap to run MSSQL. The fact that it's running the eplaya does not surprise me as the so called IT staff volunteers have a history of throwing the cheapest crap in here they can.

What sucks donkey balls is they have alienated or turned away several people who offered to upgrade them for free and even toss in support. And now they will have to suffer and take the rest of us along for the ride.

Still for what it is it's not half bad...but it's like expecting a Ferrari and only getting a Fiat....yep, fix it again Tony will be what maintaing the board will be like.

I have no problem with open source software, as long as there is somebody that knows it and can support it. mySQL is the preferred DB for the backend of most open source applications like phpBB. In fact Microsoft has even embraced it with their latest version of web server IIS7. They even have a mySQL connector for MSSQL, Though not all open source applications will work with it glitch free.

Glitches? Glitches that have put a major project on hold for 2 months over here until I demanded MySQL get scrapped and replaced. For the most part open source is great. But for what I'm doing it's been one of the biggest pains in the ass I've ever had to deal with...the hate I have for MySQL has been EARNED.

I haven't seen the ISS for years. Last time I setup the camera and camcorder but neither did justice to it. It was when the shuttle docked and the sun was at the perfect point below the horizon. Couldn't miss it if you tried.

The glitches I was referring to were with open source and MS SQL. My company is a Microsoft Partner, so I am actually prejudiced in their favor. I don't know what sort of project you're developing so I can't comment on it. It depends on what language you are programming in on the front end as to which DB server you'd want to use on the backend; and of course, the OS. Try installing MS SQL on Linux.

I'm very biased in favor of Microsoft. The app we're so freaking locked into gives us the option to go with either MySQL or MS Server 2005 / 2008. I listened to the engineers and went with MySQL against my better judgement and my descent into hell began. And truth be told it may still cost me a great job because of everything. After I said I've had enough and called up a SVP in Chennai and dumped screen shot after fucking screen shot and even more info at him they sent a guy out and we dumped MySQL and as long as I have a say in anything I will never, ever go back.

I can say with the utmost sincerity that I absofuckinglutely HATE MySQL. $23M in losses in just one of the outages does little to make me change my mind.

I apologize for my rants...MySQL was so last week. This week it was Verisign giving me fits. On the bright side I know more about SSL's than I ever did.

In any case my Ferrari vs. Fiat comparison still applies....I hope the eplaya team's experience goes smoother than mine did. And I'll try and shut up now and quit bitching.

For $23,000,000 you get a free 1-seat license for unlimited rants...

I hear ya. It would be my first choice too, especially for business critical applications.

Aside from the license fee (assuming you're exaggeration is in jest); that squeezy stress ball, in the form of knowing there is always someone there to help with business critical outages, is well worth the cost.
