"only users granted special access..." message

Postby Fufa » Thu Jun 23, 2011 11:16 pm

"Sorry, but only users granted special access can read topics in this forum."

Huh? Are there "special access" forums? Never seen that notification before... Is it normal or a bug?

There's probably an admin/moderator forum that normal users don't have access to, but i'm not sure how you managed to find a link to a thread in on of those forums. But if you go into the "death to spammers" thread you can see one AntiM put into "Quarantine" which I assume is one of those forums and it brings up the same message. Just my guess.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Now and then a topic or thread needs to be held for review. It goes into quarantine until the mods and/or admin can go over the issue. Could be potential commerce, could be other issues. There is a section of eplaya only the moderators and the admins can access, it is our working area. Pretty damn dull actually, where we keep the spam IPs and so on. Not like we have Naked Sexy Parties.

Usually we don't leave a shadow thread behind, but it is the default setting. That, and if you were following a discussion and it got quarantined, you'd be denied access.

The problem was although he makes his living playing poker, he also works as a lifestyle consultant (or passion coach, I'd have to look for the exact term). The links did lead to his pictures in his article, but his site is pitching his role as a coach/consultant. I communicated with him directly, asking him if he made money doing this. I could see much of it was donated to charities, admirable, but is he keeps any at all for himself, it falls to commerce, hence violating the TOS/guidelines. He declined to answer that directly. I did let him know that if it was a purely free/gift service, then his site wasn't a problem. He told me to leave it in quarantine. I must infer that it was not free services from his replies. So quarantine it is.

One of those topics which fell on the wrong side of the TOS. He could have posted those pics directly to eplaya to share them, or used a direct vehicle than his article. He chose not to do so.

Whether a post is commercial or not is discussed in the mod area, and is put back up if it is determined to be okay. The post still exists, and I am awaiting feedback from the other mods, however, the response from the user make it unlikely it will be returned as it was originally composed.

Does this answer your question?

Thanks AntiM, I do believe it was. I wasn't aware that threads could be quarantined. That must have been why I got the error message when I tried to open it. It was more the error message than the thread itself that interested me :)

We have not had the quarantine area for very long, but it was needed for documentation. Previously, threads were (and can still be) deleted. No record existed, unless we'd backed it up personally on our own computers. Most of the time, no one of bothered with that. This is better, it gives the mods a useful tool in making group decisions.

Nothing sinister or secret, mostly notes about whats going on, fixes and a list of IP's for the computers that hit us daily with bot ads for viagra, "your A+1 source for digital cameras", mortgage offers, more boner meds, ridiculous offers for employment, blah blah.... all the shit your spam filter at home filters out.

Other than that its pretty boring with threads as old as any other section.

It IS boring... while it makes it sound like some sorta First Camp Naked Hot-Tub Clique, it's mostly administrative crap. Side comments on how many cliques it takes to get to the center of a spammer, "physical plant" issues with the new board layout, the ever-popular slippers, and keeping track of statistical garbage... I was just catching up thru it, and realized that from the outside it looks all exotic and cool, from the inside it looks like a grey cardboard box. With a dim light bulb.

Kinda like making sausage... if you knew what went in there, you would never eat sausage again.
