Beginning of the Event

Post by Jstrat » Fri Jul 01, 2011 11:23 am

Hi all,

I have been looking for the answer to this for some time, and I apologize if it's hiding in plain sight, as it were.

As the event starts on Monday the 29th, does that mean the first people are driving up late Sunday night to get there at midnight as the days change, or is it early Monday morning after that, or some other time altogether? I am driving from the east coast, and I need to know what days are travel days and what nights I need a place to sleep until I get there.

Many thanks, and apologies for my ignorance. :D

OK, cool. Thank you very much.

Is driving up Sunday evening and getting in the line discouraged? How soon is too soon?

Shoot for arriving at 12:01. That way you are not loitering around in Gerlach waiting for 12:01.

I have a question about the end of Burning Man. The website says it ends Sept 5. Is that when everyone leaves or do they all leave at the same time the 6th?

I'm confused.

I booked a room in Vegas, my first stop over, for the night of the 5th. Should I have done it the 6th?

Most folks leave either Sunday the 4th or Monday the 5th.
If Vegas is the first place you are stopping you should be good. Just wake up early on Monday and hit the road. I do supposed they give some extra time to folks with huge camps that need extra time tearing down. I'd imagine that works something along the lines of "your early pass doubles as a late pass".
Personally, I think even Sunday is very depressing. The city is kinda empty, less music, less partying, I wouldn't want to stay past the 5th.

Thanks :)

So if I pack most of it together Sunday night, say my goodbyes and so forth, I can hit the road Monday. If I was RVing it or staying with friends it wouldn't matter. At least the hotel rooms are less than I budgeted, which is good, because I also have more money than I thought I would.

God, I love when that happens!

I just recently found out that for me, September is a 3 pay check month. Which this times works out that first August check pays mid August bills, and second August check doesn't have to pay any bills, since September's first check comes before the 3rd. Woo Hooo Free To Burn pay check!!!

Jstrat, just glad to help!!!

Yes, it is discouraged. By the state of Nevada. Having a huge line of cars plugging up a freeway is a nightmare (logistically) and dangerous. Pay for a camping permit on Pyramid Lake and use that as a "staging" ground for your expedition.

Last year, they opened the Gate early (6 PM Sunday) to reduce the congestion on the highway. The problem with arriving at midnight is not just the crowds, but you're trying to find a camp spot in the dark. Unless you know where you're camping, or trying for a serious land grab (difficult in the dark), I'd say shoot for dawn Monday.

Here is what Gate typically does for early arrivers on Sunday:

First to show up go into D-Lot, the punishment zone for showing up before the event actually opens. In D-Lot the first people in are the last people out of the lot. This is to discourage arrival before midnight.
If D-Lot becomes full (when?) then a line is formed at the Gate with no one entering the city until midnight.
If the BLM says that traffic is backing up on the highway and we must let people in, then the Gate opens. Gate does not make the call, the BLM does. And every time this happens the future of the event is put in peril because this is a direct violation of the agreement in the BLM Event Permit.
Once the Gate is open, 6 or 7 lanes of new comers and one lane of D-Lot survivors enter the city, being searched as fast as the Gate volunteers can manage. Once D-Lot is empty (dawn?) then all lanes are used for entry from the highway.

The line still extends to the highway at dawn. (Note the D-lot line coming in from the right to meet the line to the horizon of incoming traffic.)

You will want to be packed Sunday afternoon/evening so you can sleep Sunday night. Your mileage may vary, but we are typically wiped the fuck out when we roll off the playa Tue morning. We spend the first night in Reno and the second night in Vegas. By then, after about 14 hot showers, some hot tub and pool time and many hours of exhausted sleep, we are almost feel human and ready to push on through back to Texas.

I think a lot of people under estimate how potentially drained physically and emotionally they can be at the end of the event, especially their first year.

That's right, and at the start, altitude sickness can get you. high temperatures at altitude affect air density and ability to carry oxygen. There is a saying at South lake tahoe airport that in the summer, planes fly in the cool morning and crash in the hot afternoon...same for people...

Thanks, all. I'll shoot for a morning arrival. I don't want to be part of anything that jeopardizes the event... and I don't really want to get there solo in the dark on my first burn. ;)

Oh, come now . . . if you get to Gates by 1 or 2am, often times the sun is coming up by the time your tent and shelter have been raised. :)

I hate trying to fall asleep at 6am.

Don't be silly. Everyone knows Dr. Dre is monitoring the event from a secret compound in the mountains of Colorado. Today's final shuttle launch delivered his private satellite, which allows him better telco with BRC.

There are thousands of people leaving the event from right after the man burns until Monday afternoon. Exodus can have lines and wait times as long as the wait to get in. 8-10 hrs is common for the Monday exodus and Vegas is another 9-10hrs from Gerlach. I urge you to think about staying in Reno and getting a good night's rest before traveling further. We want you to make it back again. :)
We stay until Tuesday and it's not sad at all. It's peaceful after a whole week of input and it gives us the chance to spend a quiet evening with our other village mates.
Suck it.

I could add to Dr. Jet's remarks that the shift in energy and vista and the feeling of openness after the event is wonderful, and a whole nother dimension to the experience. However, I won't because I want you off the playa on my special Tuesday.

Bwahahahaha, I hope I have some coffee left on Special Tuesday but, either way I promise not to disturb you Fishy!

This will be my first Burn as well, SEB, so I am in no position to give advice. But I am driving to Vegas afterwards too, and, all I have read here had made me decide to: a) MOOP around on Monday rather than sit in my car waiting to get out, and b) stop in Reno overnight before I hit that long road south.

My vote is to leave early AM Tuesday. Monday exodus is just chaos and I avoid it at all costs. I prepare everything Monday afternoonish, and make it a point to not party at all and maybe even take a nice Advil PM around 8pm and get a good, full nights sleep. I push off from camp no later than 630am, and usually hit maybe only an hour or so worth of traffic at the gate.

If I were able to get enough time off, I would leave Tuesday to avoid the rush and idling, although I do get a bit melancholy when everyone is packing up and leaving. I love the extra space and emptiness, but I miss the people.

We usually stay until Tuesday and leave. I love watching the city build up in the beginning and blow away at the end. It's nice closure for me. I LOVE having no Exodus line and a leisurely commute out of BRC with no traffic or waiting.

This was a very well rounded thread. It started as Entering the Event, and now its moved to leaving the event.
