Re: Work in Progress
Oooh! I love Master hidden shackle puck locks.
Is that the 6270 or 6271?
The 6271 is the reinforced cast steel and the 6270 is hardened.
Needless to say I vastly prefer the 6270...

Half inspired by this years theme.
Half inspired by the hijinx surrounding the Harveywood sign in '10.
Half commentary on the proliferation of twatter and the endless stream of meaningless minutiae and earth-shattering news that bombards us by the minute.
Toddler Tweets
The blocks are the medium, the messages will be captured by a disposable camera chained to a post at the street and later posted to an album.
Come play with the over-sized alphabet blocks and beam your message across the playa (or at least to the poor folk across the street).
What can you say in 15 characters or less? (the more infantile the better)

Todo:
-touch up some of the white paint
-cut a few more masonite inserts
-tape the edges
-apply clear coat
-figure out the size of the containment pen
-figure out the optimum distance for the camera post.

Right in front of Nellie, The Preying Man-toss an 8 ft tall human-powered catapult which will be firing mulicolored LED projectiles into the night air (pictures to come).
So the location will depend on what time I arrive and what space fits the projects (I need to cordon off an alley for the firing range).
If you don't see the blocks or the preying man-toss look for the two lions guarding the monkey hut with the shiny facade. :?:
I'm going to register at info as Camp Non Sequitur (JK), what can I say, I have eclectic tastes?

Re: Work in Progress
Precisely, they are 65# rated corrugated cardboad boxes. My biggest concerns were keeping them from blowing across the playa and keeping them from collapsing. I have two interlocking pieces of 1/4" masonite running diagonally from corner to corner to provide a little more rigidity and heft. They will be in a low containment fence with one or two lengths of paracord on the front. Over 100 hours of painting went in to them, 2 coats of white and then the six colors. I will apply one or two coats of clear coat to get them a bit glossy and cut down on scuffing as well as reinforce all corners with clear shipping tape. The distribution of letters across the blocks is the same as the average distribution in text (probably too many vowels but I have a literal mind). There are 4 blanks for word separation as well as the # sign.Drawingablank wrote: I assume you are transporting those knocked down into flat pieces.
The post will have a disposal camera chained to it, a spare in a pocket and a pouch for completed cameras. I will see if the camp across the way will be amenable to holding on to a few cameras and take a shot now and again as insurance in case cameras walk off (which I'm sure some will).
I'll put together a brief sign suggesting participants ask a passerby to snap a picture of their "tweet" with them in it. It will also instruct them to come here for access to the photo album or to send the request for URL to toddlertweets AT gmail.com. I'll ask that people refrain from sitting, standing, kneeling, reclining, fucking, etc on top of the boxes but you know how that goes, I fully expect there will be some casualties.
The whole shebang should collapse into s 3'x3'x6" pile, a big concern in design was that I have a small vehicle and need space for the catapult (also collapsible), lions, and my persoanl camping gear. I think I'm going to buy a small amount of space on the NY container today, chances are I won't need it and will be offering it up gratis in "Shared Resources" in the near future (load-in date is August 13th).
In all liklihood they will end up in a burn barrel, or the recycle station on the way back to I80, preferably someone will have a use for them, DPW? day care? (same thing?) although I can't speak to what condition they'll be in. The catapult has already been offered to, and claimed by, my local HS physics dept.
It should be interesting to see what photos are taken, I will post the pictures that are taken regardless of content (assuming the photo processing lab will process them).

Puppy! That is the coolest project, I love it so!
I've entered your address in my "eplayan locations" notepad file. Everytime I see anyone post an address, where & when they volunteer, a camp name, or find out two eplayans are a couple (so romantic!), I paste it into the note.
That and my buddy list (which is by no means complete...) will be my checklists for the burn. I know I will never be able to see them all but I'm gonna give it my best.

Just when I didn't think the day could get any better, wow!
That is monumental. We need to buy an AmeriGas propane truck and use a 300gal tank for an accumulator. Make that gas pipeline explosion in the mid 90's look like a disposable chinese lighter.
I'm goin out to the shop now. Just got an idea...

just dove into the trike audio system parts. going large 100W for a 24V system. found a couple solutions for the mp3 player (w/remote!) using a 5V power source. extra 12V jacks and usb stuff thrown in for good measure. I have enough speaker crap er pieces to figure something out... probably a line array of small full range drivers.

Re: Work in Progress
just tested the propane flame effect appliance! Used a Siemens LOGO! programmable relay to drive the two blue solenoid valves with an interposing relay so that the two steel lines alternate blasts of propane through the pilot light ring. pretty impressive, but because it is either one or the other without delay between, the two flame kinda merge into one. Amazing how much fire comes out of 1/4" o.d. 0.035" wall high pressure steel hydraulic tubing, like 4 - 5 feet of fire!
so do I spread the flame outlets to make a "V" shaped discharge, or do I change the programmable relay so there is a gap between the two jets of flame...
then there is the big one in the middle.................

Speaking of propane, we're bring four 20# tanks this year. Is there any benefit to having them filled closer to the playa? I'm just wondering primarily about the effects of altitude and pressure change on the tanks.
