OK I just can't resist, as you hit the nail right on the head. And that's the problem. There is no way we can balance the budget without more revenue AND less spending. It's not rocket science. It's basic math.

Bring back the Reagan Era tax code of mid 1984, after the second round of corporate tax code overhauling and before the ridiculous cuts to capital gains and you have a very fair and equitable revenue system.

And the cuts/savings need to be in the big three, defense, social security and medicare. Any cuts to anything else without making significant changes in the big three first are nothing more than pissing in the wind.

Definitely agree with cutting defense spending. Social Security should be fixed by removing the cap on SS tax ad means testing, and Medicare should be fixed by implementing a public health system for everyone.

That does not take away from waste elsewhere, though.

"We" are not cutting basic services. "They" are.
"They" being government bureaucrats, know if they threaten to cut emergency services, we will kowtow to their wishes. They know, where the waste is, but usually, it's benefiting their own "pork barrel" ideas of "need", and or benefits contributors or is due to cronyism.

I very much support good education, and, good pay for teachers. I understand, education is the backbone of our society.
I also feel there is waste there. I'd also submit "good/fair pay" is very relative to who you are and where you live.
There is plenty of waste to go around.

and, no, I'd bet you know what I mean..........I do think teachers make a fair wage.....sure, lots of folks want more, but, that's subjective.
What I mean about waste in education, is the voluminous bureaucracy, layers upon layers of administration, Wasted food at free lunches, a whole bus hauling one or two kids, monies spent on super landscaping, huge insurance requirements
costs associated with "PC" crap.
And, harsh as it sounds, there are kids going to college, on varying degrees of scholarships, that have no business in college. But, it's "free money" so, why not go? How much is wasted in that sense?

I speak from local knowledge, but, am sure it is nation wide.
Here, for instance, the school district, instead of remodeling an existing school, decided to raze the building, buy another piece of property, build that schools replacement, and, sell the original land (after huge clean up costs from tearing the old, serviceable building down). Only a couple of years later, they bought back the same land they had sold (at huge profit for the seller), and, built another school right there...........
We have one district here, with 700 kids, K-8. It has a superintendent, principal, two vice principals, HR personnel, counselor, nurse, etc, etc.......all at over 100K per year.

I know, it's all subjective, and there will be arguments for all the above..........but, I'd sure bet, if you look at what is necessary, and what happens, they are different.
