Re: The Map! The Map!
Interesting, additional thoroughfares at 15 minute marks from G outward. More corner plots and road frontage.

Re: The Map! The Map!
Like the new 15minute additions to the back streets, it will get rid of those stupidly long blocks back there.
I think I'm one of the few who really doesn't care about the street names- they're always "A", "B", "C" etc to me. Maybe I'm just too lazy to bother learning long names when a single letter will do.

Very cool. Cut-Through Camp will be enraged that someone took their idea!Interesting, additional thoroughfares at 15 minute marks from G outward. More corner plots.
Note: Cut-Through Camp is easily enraged.
I am really interested in not-camping on Engagement, Divorce or Funeral . . . with an eye instead for Hajj, or Initiation.

(Graduation acceptable.)

I'm happy with Journey IF insipid music isn't attached to it.
Although Kindergarten might be more appropriate for me this year.

Re: The Map! The Map!
From Wikipedia:
Liminality (from the Latin word līmen, meaning "a threshold") is a psychological, neurological, or metaphysical subjective state, conscious or unconscious, of being on the "threshold" of or between two different existential planes, as defined in neurological psychology (a "liminal state") and in the anthropological theories of ritual by such writers as Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner.
Given that I poached the map URL before it was actually publicly linked... Placement seems imminent. Have to have a Map before you give people addresses!

Re: The Map! The Map!
I'm envisioning folk from the walk-in camp, on their first trek in, taking a :15 street hitting G and going "wait...what?"
I guess figuring out to take a right or a left and then reversing it at the next intersection will be "graduating".

Ya, I looked up Liminal too. But how does that relate to any rite of passage? At least to any rite of passage I have ever had.

Re: The Map! The Map!
With all the references to liminal meaning "on the edge", on the threshold (or on both sides of a threshold! How Schroedinger's Cat of them!) transitional, etc . . . I think it represents imminent change/imminent rites/things about to happen . . . and maybe there's a little joke involving Liminal being the outside edge/threshold of the streets themselves.
I kinda like it.

Re: The Map! The Map!
I'll buy that, I would've went with "Last Rites" but I guess it lacks the same cachet.Savannah wrote:With all the references to liminal meaning "on the edge", on the threshold (or on both sides of a threshold! Re: The Map! The Map!
What's really fun is realizing that the great semi-imaginary whooshing noise around lunchtime today was 90% of the incoming Black Rock City population flipping through their dictionaries and clicking mice to look up "Liminal". In one fell swoop, a little-used word gains greater prominence.
I note also that in can mean intermediate, in-between, or barely perceptible. Merriam-Webster claims the first known use in this form was in 1884. From the Latin, "limin-, limen" (threshold).

Re: The Map! The Map!
We (well most of us, I hope) are more familiar with "subliminal" just under our threshold of observation.
I suggest that in this context "liminal" refers to a mind state in a rite of passage, and in many cases an induced mind state deliberately created by the shaman (oh crap, I can't believe I said that, laughing forest is going to think I'm her sister) or emcee or whatever sort of guide you have for that particular rite.

Re: The Map! The Map!
Interesting. That subliminal reference really help me get my head around the concept by associating it with a word I knew. Didn't think of the root word. And Savannah, good take on the last street concept too. I like double entendres.

Re: The Map! The Map!
From what I can infer in the placement info this year, it sounds like we are all being informed individually and that there will not be a list per se. And yes, I've tried all those URLs too!!!homey wrote: nice work on the map, bigbluedoggy! now why don't you be a good lil doggy and poach the placement list! i've tried every conceivable variation on pervious years' lists and nothing.
