Email the DMV. their address is on the main site. You will get a faster and accurate answer only that way

Deadline to register was 15th of July. Its not likely that you'll be approved. As one might imagine the DMV is currently SWAMPED with applications from people who put there requests in on time and they're being handled on a first come first served basis. We're talking 500 applications. I don't work for DMV but I'll say that I think your chances are pretty close to zero in this case. Send a e-mail to DMV just the same but if you don't hear back from them before you leave for the event you'll need to either remove the motors or leave the machine at home because it won't be allowed into the event.

Splinter will verify this.

It it doesn't have a DMV permit before it enters the city, we have to impound them at the Gate. Please don't make us have to do that. It sucks being the bad guy and it holds up traffic for people who have been stuck in a car for a really long time.

There's always next year!

Try over 700. All of which we need to get through by Saturday.

Pre-registration closed on 15 July, after having been open for more than three months. It's taking all of the DMV's collective energy to process the applications we received on time; there just isn't room to make exceptions.

So out of those 700, how many will actually get approved? Is there a pre-set limit on how many vehicles will be permitted on the playa? Does anyone have stats about how many non-mutant vehicles are on the playa- emergency vehicles, water trucks, JOTS, rangers, DPWs, etc..? I'm kind of curious what is the vehicle:pedestrian ratio?

There is no hard limit on how many can be approved. My understanding is that if all 700 are exceptional, then all 700 will be approved.

A'yup. No pre-determined limit.

There will be a substantial culling of the carts with feathers as 'art' thing though.

I look forward to seeing the pictures - and expect you'll be one of the first applicants next year. *grin*

"...... My understanding is that if all 700 are exceptional, then all 700 will be approved........"

hhmmmmm....... judging from discussions on several other BM related boards, "exceptional" is truly a subjective term, determined not merely by the artistic effort put forth, but moreso by how the red-tape application was actually worded. This will be a very hot topic on the playa this year. Those of you arriving later in the week, be sure to watch for the DMV Impound Yard on the way into the city... shouldn't be hard to miss.

biggest permit number I have heard of is #561 (out of the afore mentioned ~700 or so)...anyone have a higher permit number?

And not all have been approved/rejected yet, so this number could go higher.

Those aren't actual LICENSE numbers, but PRE-REGISTRATION numbers...and as a pre-reg number was generated for every single person who created an account, whether or not they actually completed the form, those really aren't a good indication of how many invitations have been issued. License numbers won't be issued until the DMV opens on-playa on the 28th, and will be first-come, first-served, with probably no relation to the pre-reg number whatsoever.

I was just up at Hottie Central tonight, and we've got at least another couple hundred applications to go through...we're working as hard and as fast as we can to get them done.

Change of plans...

Post by Rage » Wed Aug 04, 2004 9:07 am

If the interior power of our vehicle resorts back to an earlier quadracycle (double bicycle) powered plan and non motorized, must I still worry about a license?

I'm not DMV. But I sure would like to see more double rider bikes. As long as they doon't get crazy and run over people. That way you can see the city together.

Last summer I saw a bike built for two riders side by side. Two wheeled and was two rider powered.

If it doesn't have a motor, it is no longer our concern.

Our mutant vehicle that has been approved the last 2 years did not get approved this year, we'll be leaving it at home. I do feel the dmv was very clear on the requirements this year and I can see why our vehicle was not approved under the newer guidelines.
I would like to stop by the dmv and chat with the hotties about what we might be able to do next year to fully comply. Not a bitch session by any means, but more of a brainstorming for the future.

It will be nice to have a different experience this year. At times I felt the vehicle was somewhat of an anchor. It defintely provided social interaction and people really dug it, but this year will be great just walking and biking. We'll be incorporating some of the art and lights we had on it into our camp this year.

If it has a motor AND a seat, it needs a license.
