Re: Heat
Just a quick note on the real temperatures you can expect at Burning Man.
During the two calendar weeks of the year that Burning Man falls under, the average daily high is about 88º (low about 52º). It can hit 100º (especially if the event starts closer to mid-August), but this is very rare and there have never been more than two 100º+ days in a row during the event. If you have been getting used to triple digits in Texas, then this is going to feel like air conditioning (set to "energy saving").
Here is an article about the (real) temperatures to expect at the event: http://www.quora.com/What-are-the-tempe ... urning-Man?

Last year the burn was a true vacation from the usual sacramento summer. it was like 80 on the playa and 110 in sacramento.

Re: Heat
An article in Wired on an experiment showing the uselessness of Gatorade,
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/ ... -gatorade/
"While Gatorade began as beverage for the Florida Gators football team – the seven tablespoons of sugar per serving were supposed to help replenish the carbs lost during sweat – it has since expanded into a Byzantine array of drinks tailored for different phases of the workout process. If we really want to maximize performance, then we can’t just drink Gatorade while working out. We also have to drink Gatorade Prime before exertion, Gatorade Perform during and Gatorade Recover afterwards.
Needless to say, most of these claims are bullshit. But they’re an interesting kind of bullshit. Because it turns out that sugary sports drinks (like Gatorade, Powerade, VitaminWater, etc.) do generate significant performance benefits. It’s just that these benefits have little to do with the replenishment of lost electrolytes."
