Re: One Item for BM a Day
Today, my one thing is finishing cleaning out this apartment so when we come home, it's an organized and happy place to be. I may also give my cat a bath so he's fresh and pretty when he goes to stay with his Auntie Aneesah while I am gone.

Very excited about some illegal arms trading.

I fixed it!
Hi Brody! I hear there's some sort of unicorn parade/march this year - that's SO 2009, dontcha think?
Finally bit the bullet and put up a coat I got, before I ever knew that I was going to Burning Man, in case I ever went to Burning Man.

Got the roof rack on my little car today...
made some better padding for it of neoprene, too.
Looks like the little brackets that hold it to the doorways are a tad too short.
Lucky for me, I work in a machine shop!

I bought a ankle length white leather coat from http://www.shopgoodwill.com and finally figured out what to do with it.

The weird detail at the bottom. Something has to be done with all those weird decorative circles!

Very low resolution video of the result modeled by CptSmashy.

I can't figure out if that bottom should be an octopus or a jellyfish.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
It looks like it was supposed to be like flames maybe? I can't figure out why anyone would have worn it in it's original state unless it was for a wedding in the snow or something. It's hard to see in the pictures but there's beads on the cuff's pattern and little rhinestones on those weird embroidery circles. Now it's just a flashy sparkle pony beacon.
Suck it.

Installed the trailer hitch and stress tested the shade structure.
Picked a new brocade for the next coat attempt.

Word of caution on brocade...serge the edges after cutting it out

Word of caution on brocade...serge the edges after cutting it out. I ended up repairing my shoulder seams after the fact with fusible webbing. Live and learn as they say hehe
Good luck with the coat, DAB!

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Thanks, I'll need it because I have to scale this pattern up quite a bit to fit me and I've never attempted scaling a pattern before. Picked up a big sheet at the thrift store to make a mock up with. Now just debating if I should try to locate my old drafting stuff in the attic or just buy a cheap set of curves.MyDearFriend wrote:Or for those of us without sergersjella wrote:Drawingablank wrote:Installed the trailer hitch and stress tested the shade structure.

stay-stiching, twill tape, & bias tape are all your friends if you want things to stay put.
Good luck with the coat, DAB!
As for serging, I would have to travel into the city during my normal work hours to borrow time on one so will probably explore other options. On the first coat I used fray check then on high stress areas I ironed the seams flat with a strip of interfacing over it.
I have no idea what stay stitching or twill tape are. I have seen bias tape, but have no clue how to use it. I have very little sewing experience.

Very Lovely Misa
DAB, I don't have a serger either
. Stay stitching can be as simple as a zig zag or your machine might have an overlock stitch that sews a series square looking stitches \_/-\_/ that comes right to the the edge of the fabric

What is it about those Slavs, eh? Lovely ladies everywhere!
I am sitting in front of a webcam I bought today for a second Skype interview for a job at HQ. I hate looking at my face. Good thing I never got that famous acting career. Last night I found about a gajillion more items to sell for playa monies. And I took two arm fulls and a bag of clothes that will hopefully sell at a local store in today. And I washed my respirator mask.
Re: One Item for BM a Day
FINALLY started working on our shade structure. YAY! Hopefully we can order the aluminet soon and get even sooner.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
I don't think I can keep up with this thread, but I'm totally getting amped up reading about all your fabulous prep.
Today, my one item was pulling the wheels off Big Blue, the Burning Man Van, to check the brakes. Lubed the chasis while I was under there rolling around in the dirt. In one of the rear tires, I noticed a nail that's in at an angle and all ground down. Doesn't leak, but I'm not going to wait for it to. Don't want a flat on the way to the playa. The tires are kind of worn anyway, so it's time. So now it looks like I've got to add about $300 to my budget for 2 new tires.
Also want to put new belts in the engine, so old Big Blue is really going to stretch the wallet this year.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
I believe the machine can do both of those although the overlock requires fiddling around with some discs inside (and possibly changing the foot) so I'll just do the zigzag. I have a whole box of parts (various feet, cams, etc...) for the machine that I've never used and the manual only has some pretty crude line drawings about using them so I'm trying to keep it simple.jella wrote:DAB, I don't have a serger either.
