thread needle with doubble the lenth you think you need------ burn needle----and douse with rubbing alachol
re douse wound with alachol----
and apply ora jell in small incraments (mostly to outer edge of wound) the effect doesnt last too long

do back and forth pattern on the wound
be sure to tie a small knot at the end of your string----- at the top of the wound one extra back and forth

Good tip.

Triken has been called upon to put in stitches before. Not sure if she used dental floss. We'd have to ask her.

One thing to keep in mind is TIME. My son recently enough hid an injury from me that required stitches. By the time I got him to the hospital (less than 24hrs after the fact) they told me that it was too late. Apparently the edges start to deteriorate pretty quickly and will just rip, making it worse.

Butterfly stitches or stitch strips are probably a good idea to have in your 1st aide kit, for this reason alone. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has used the Medical crazy glue method as well.....

(my husband swears by duct tape. When he walks in the door wrapped in duct tape, I KNOW I'm not going to like what's underneath it!)

I have and it works well most of the time.
Occasionally it will cause some swelling and throbbing on fingertip wounds requiring lancing thru the glue pad and squeeze draining followed by application of another drop of glue.
I think the key is to clean as much blood out of the wound and close it as tightly as possible after application.
Do not use it in extermely deep wounds as it will become encapsulated and is a stone cold revolving bitch when it tries to migrate to the surface.
Sweetpea grabbed tons of catgut and silk stitching kits when she was a combat medic. Still have em on hand. I have self stitched before. It's not nearly as bad as you think and after the first 4 to 5 you're pretty much numb. I've also done self-surgery with utility knives and boxcutters on job sites. DIY medical care is pretty cool and when the wound heals up you feel really darned good about yourself.

I carry 7% iodine..and, in a pinch have cleaned wounds with lacquer thinner.........hey, it works!!!
Animal supply/feed stores, have tons of good stuff, much cheaper, and usually work better, than can be had at the pharmacy.
Wound protectant juice, super glue stitching alternative, strong iodine, betadyne, even antibiotics and such, mostly injectable.

and, I too swear by duct tape........

I have used dental floss, glues, tapes, butterflys, etc. on several occasions. Like FF says, it has its moments. And the same
with knives and cutters.
But when your stuck out in BFE you do what you can with what you have.

The times I've had to stitch myself back together, I've just used regular sewing thread...
(Polyester doesn't deteriorate as fast as cotton)
...and a regular sewing needle- the thinner, the better.
It hurts more on the coming-back-out stitch than the going-in, so you need to push down on the skin as the needle comes back through or it could tear.
Nice thing about sewing thread, you can choose the colour!

I've found super glue useful too, but you don't want to get it in your bloodstream!
With a Very Deep Gash, best to try & hold it closed as much as possible BEFORE applying the glue.
This usually requires a helping hand...

self aid is great to know, but at TTITD there are medical aid stations on 3,6,9 plazas nxt to the ranger outposts. If you can't get yourself there, send a runner or flag down a ranger. They have radios. There will also be a huge Mash style triage center near center camp. try to avoid the $50,000(est.) ambulance ride to Reno.

be careful, don't trip over your whatever..
