Looking for Military Veterans

Post by allysoncox1 » Mon Jul 18, 2011 11:46 am

Hi, I'm Ally, a virgin burner this year. I'm also an Army Veteran and am curious to know if there are any camps or events for vets. Thanks.

Hi Allyson, welcome to the board . . .

I don't know of a veteran-specific camp (someone more knowledgeable may chime in soon) but military folks seem very well-represented at Burning Man.

I'll imagine you're fairly organized in terms of preparation, but on the off-chance you haven't seen it, the First Timer's Guide is here:

Thanks to both of you. I've read everything I can get my hands on and have a pretty complete packing list. Luckily, I'm going with a veteran burner, so have a little bit of a leg up. :D Ally

Tons of vets on here and at the event. I just don't know of any who camp specifically for that. MyLarry and myself are both Navy vets.

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!
Viet Nam Vet here. 101st Airborne.

Have questions? Read this first: http://www.burningman.com/first_timers/
Everybody on eplaya is always excited to help first timers; but in sympathy for some of us old timers, please get your required reading out of the way before posting. As hard as it is to rein in the the excitement and enthusiasm, and as unbelievable as it might seem, most of your questions have already been asked and answered, if you just take a moment to read.

Now, let the adventure begin!

Hey Ally welcome to Eplaya!

Like AntiM and Jkisha have said, there are Vets on playa, but I don't think many of them make it a point to camp with other vets. I'm sure it would be easy to find them though. Maybe through something in the Open Discussions, or Q&A asking who are Vets, and if they'd like to camp together, or if you just want to have a party one night.

Ya, other than for the medals hanging on the wall, that part of my life is far behind me. Certainly not the basis for deciding who I'd want to camp with.

I think that at the burn people tend not to affiliate on that basis. I'd like to think that it's because what they are getting on the playa doesn't rub them in the way that makes them feel they have to congregate.
And I'm sure that can be better expressed.
And if you want, if you are "that" sort of person (an organizer, that is) you could do some sort vet event. Afternoon might be best, but you'll need real-estate.

Just an idea.

Ally

I'm an Air Force reservist and this will be my first year going to BRC. I'm probably the least "military" person you'll ever meet, even by reservist and public affairs (my job) standards.

I'll be working in Media Mecca or look around for me and come say hi. I'm probably sorta nice.

Now that I know your name is "Brian" and not "Brain" your niceness score (by my scorekeeping) has more than doubled.
